so about a year ago the 95 atx would not start ,i just would hear a clicking noise , next day a local tech tells me i need a new starter? i first thought it was the batt. now today im getting the same click and no start. ive tried getting a jump - it was a no go - just clicking. is there a way to tell if its the batt or starter? my batt light has been on for a month , i just dont want to drop $100 on a batt and find out i needed a starter. any ideas? the first mechanic that fixed it has moved far away. also if it is the starter , what kind of job is that?

usually if your battery light is on when driving it is your alternator most cases. But if its doing a clicking noise its your starter. Take your battery to a auto zone, some kind of parts store to have it checked out. They do it for free so. The starter is a pretty easy job if your a little mechanically inclined.

Go a manual tranny? You could get it rolling and pop the clutch while turning the key to see if it will start and stay running to charge the battery. If the battery light has been on then you need to check the voltage at the battery with and without the alt. running.

The easiest. Bar none. Especially if the starter has been out in the last couple of years.

When it clicks, do the lights dim? If so, it's definately your starter. I would bet that your oil cooler to block gasket is leaking on the starter and it's all gummed up with oil and dirt. You can remove the stater really easily and have it checked, or you can just replace it or have it rebuilt.

I would rather replace an alternator than a starter, but as far as jobs go it's pretty easy. Just... please, please, disconnect the battery first.

It sounds like a starter. Mine is doing the same thing; I think I'm in the same boat as you.

right under your oil filter. Take off the bolted wires off the starter first then the starter. I forgot the sizes you need but just a socket wrench with the socket sizes all you need .

*update* i just returned from the g/fs house and , light was dim due to the sun setting and i could not see much. i did find the starter , but i didnt see any bolts. do i need to remove the wires before i will see any bolts? i thought i was mechanically inclined , however the g/f really enjoyed laughing at me and telling me to just get it towed and fixed by the pros. i think not , so i have done head gaskets and heater cores , i just cant see any bolts for removal? so could we elaborate just a bit on this job , please. i will try again tomm when the sun comes up. basically any hints or tips would be great. thanks again.

you might have to move that litle thing that looks like a little radiator(sorry i dont know exactly what is the name of it but is attached to the subframe, i think its 8mm bolts) Just feel around the starter the bolts are there. I beleive its 2/3 bolts.

That's the power steering cooler. There's no need to remove that. You will need to unplug the wires from the starter and make sure you disconnect the battery. Get some jack stands and look around under there. You'll see the bolts you need to remove.

If you've done head gaskets and heater cores this will be a cinch.

i dunno , i must have the faster one , cause this was not a cinch. it was not hard , but i would not call this a easy job. imo
