When I start up my 99 when the engine is cold, i get a sound that resembles dragging a pan (cooking surface down) over the ground. And yeah.....I actually did that to find a close sound other than saying it made a hocccccccccccking noise. THanks

Might be your SAI pump. Does it come from under the battery?

It runs when the car is first started.

SOunds like your starter is hanging up.. Mine does it once in a while and goes away after the car gets some use. I have a customer that has had one like that for 6 months.. So far its just anoying and wont cause damage. but means that its getting old or gummed up.

I had the same problem with my '98 SHO. In the morning when it was cold, it made that grinding noise. I thought it was the starter, as did the mechanics at Ford, and the starter was replaced. It wasn't the starter. It turned out to be the transmission and the grinding noise got worse and Ford replaced the trans. It was a pump drive shaft that was going out.
