Spindle?

I'm fairly new to the car arena. I am learning as I go. I have a '92 MTX. I have recently put a complete brake job, control arms and tie rod ends. It is still a "project car" so I had good used tires on the car.

I finally came up with the money for a new set of Kumhos and shawed the car.

The mechanic shop where i had the tires mounted said that the front passenger spindle was loose and "reemed out" and said I need a new one. He said I could get a used one. I figured a new one would be outrageous, and autoparts stores dont carry them.

What I'm asking is what year model donor car can I pull a spindle off to work on my car.

Was he just trying to tell you that you need a new wheel bearing? If so, you don't need a new spindle just a new wheel bearing within the spindle.

no he said that the bearings looked good. he said that the ball joint/control arm was loose from the bottom of the spindle.

Any Taurus or Sable, both sedans and wagons, up to and including 93 all had the same front spindles. They of course come in 2 flavors,,,with ABS (anti-lock brakes) and without ABS. So get a spindle from any ABS equipped car 1993 or older. What was reamed out??? The bearing?? the hole the strut fits in?? or the lower ball joint hole?? Bearings can be replaced, the others need a new/used spindle. By the way, the last time I "shawed" a car, I ended up with 4 flat tires from the nails!!!

So '89 to '93 will work right? I have a buddy with a tow service and might have what I need.

Oh yeah, she didn't kick too much when i drove the nails in. lol :laugh_ti:

Yup, 89 -93 with the ABS tab. On a non-ABS spindle, the tab is not there, and cannot be added later.

OH-NO!!!! I forgot 89s did not come with ABS!!!!!! Be sure to check for the ABS tab!!!! Sorry 'bout that..

I found a spindle from a 94 sable; it might me a 93. the part looks identical to my part. I have to replace the bearings/hub assembly. I didn't have to pay for the part and my buddy took it off for me.

Then you may need a lower control arm. The ball joint is incorporated into it. I don't understand how the spindle can be loose if the bearings look good. The strut slides in from the top and the lower ball joint gets pinched by the pinch bolt.

it's the part of the knuckle that "pinches" the ball joint shaft. the two tabs that the bolt go through get bent so that they look like this \ / instead of this | | and then they won'tj tighten down correctly and the shaft comes loose.

If you're going to replace the spindles then you can upgrade the brakes too.

these threads stay on here for reference so that when someone has a problem they can do a search and find answers to there problems. However a post like this, with no resolution, is pretty useless. So i answered the question. I don't see a problem with that and in addition will add that a temp. fix for this if you can't find another knuckle is to drill the hole out and replace the 12mm bolt with a 14mm bolt.

Spindle? By any chance are you referring to a steering knuckle?
