The Complainer
After searching, I'm still uncertain as to whether the issue is the speedo head itself, upper, or lower cable. This is on my 89.
Here's what it does...on mornings (typically cooler mornings lately), the speedo will jump all over the place, back and forth, up to the 140mph range, even point downward toward the steering column. It's also squeaking.
I pulled the upper cable loose and sprayed white lithium grease all "in and around" (lol) the upper part of the cable, the tip, and down in the lower cable. Once the car has been driven awhile it straightens up mostly but still wobbles and bounces within a 10-15mph range--also reads high at highway speeds.
I went ahead and ordered a new Dorman upper cable (this one is the original). Just wondering since I have to pull the cluster how to test the speedo head and replace it if it's the problem also. Hopefully I can still get that part.
Edit: oh yeah, odometer works fine and is not affected. No matter how bad the speedo acts up, I can watch the tenths column turn and it turns as it should at various rates based on the estimated speed I'm going. I also have a spare 89 cluster I picked up from the j/y for spare parts. I don't want to replace the whole cluster and lose track of my mileage though.
