I've got a Gen2 ('92) that has a broken speedo/odo. All the others instruments work. Is it easy to get at, or do you have to loosen the whole dash? These electronic, or cable actuated?

rfiltz,

First off, do you know what's failed to cause the speedo/odometer to stop working? The speedometer is cable actuated and has an upper and lower assembly. The lower assembly goes from the VSS on top of the tranny up to about half way to the firewall hole where it connects to the upper assembly. The upper assembly then goes through the firewall to the back of the instrument cluster. Is it possible that one of the cables has failed? You may want to pull out the lower assembly first (as this would be the easiest place to start) and make sure that the inner cable is intact. It could also be the gearing in the speedo head.

The instrument cluster comes out in one piece after removing the appropriate trim pieces, etc. Getting the cluster out can be a bit of a bear as it's a pretty tight fit, but it can be done. I'd recommend disconnecting the upper speedo cable from the lower cable inside the engine bay. That will give you the slack needed to get the cluster out.

Good luck! :thumb:

I've done a visual inside the engine bay and nothing is pulled out or obviously wrong. If you disconnect it from the gearbox is it easy to tell if the cable is bad?
