I'd love to see a pic since I've worked on 300 or so V8 SHO's, put in a couple dozen trannys, chopped up a whole bunch more, and have never seen one.

I wonder if someone put a Duratec tranny in there, but even if so there wouldn't be a connector on the stock harness for it.

If you have a VSS in the tranny then you have a SLO tranny. All V8 SHOs get the speedo info from the ABS computer.

Speedometer
The speedometer operates in the following manner:

The speedometer (17255) receives a speed/distance signal from the transaxle-mounted vehicle speed sensor (VSS) (9E731) (except 3.4L SHO).
On SHO vehicles the speed/distance signal is provided by the anti-lock brake control module (2B373).
Speedometer displays speed in km/h and MPH.
The speedometer for 3.4L SHO is limited to 240 Km/h (150 mph).

Let's see a pic (of the VSS installed in your tranny).

The VIN number is meaningless, and actually that part number does not cross to any Taurus or Sable apps in MicroCat anyway.

I just have to laugh here... someone is disputing two people who know more about the SHO than most people can fathom. And to back up this dispute, he's citing FORD. :nut:

Welcome to the world of the SHO. Forget everything that Ford ever told you and you might learn a thing or two. :thumb:

never seen a light but the trans shifts back and fourth if i put it in drive...i can shift it by hand and it grabs the gears fine with no slip at all ..the issue with it is that when i take off in drive it will take off in 2nd and sometimes 1st then it shifts back and forth several times and when it does that the speedo goes crazy...i can be going about 70mph and give a littlt gas and the speedo goes to 0...please help me find the problem it's getting real old to have to shift this sho every time i go to take off..plus by the way thanks for the help on the cooling tank issue the new one you told me to buy works perfact ..you do know your sho's :thumb:

When I put new knuckles on I couldn't get the old ABS sensors off the old knuckles. I got some new ones from Kirk but before that I drove around with no front sensors. The tranny didn't know what to do. It was seriously messed up.

do you think that the trans is shifting funny because of the speedo issue

Yes, the PCM tells the tranny when to shift based on a number of factors, and speed input is probably the most important. If the speedo isn't getting good data, chances are neither is the PCM.

Check the connection to the ABS computer which is located just forward of the battery tray. It's a 10mm bolt, and I recommend removing the connector and making sure both sides of it are clean -- it's very common for dirt and other contaminates to get into that connector. Usually a good blast of compressed air will clean both sides of the connector.

Short of that, as Ian mentioned it would probably come down to a problem with one of the ABS sensors. Have the codes scanned at AutoZone for free and see if there are any ABS codes.

If you take the battery out and then remove the battery tray you will see an aluminum thing with a bunch of tubes coming out. It has "SHO ONLY" on it. This is the ABS hardware. The connector is attached.

If the ECM does not see a signal say around 115 mph as happens on the 98's, what happens? Does the tranny and engine self destruct?

The car works just like normal, except for no speedometer reading. And FYI in my 98, I keep the exciter rings and speed sensors clean. I have a speedometer reading up to 130.
