Spark plug change...

So I finally got around to swapping out the spark plugs from the "F's to the Y's. I bought them back when there was trouble with the ceramic cracking on the F's but just got around to changing them today. I was planning on taking pics but it is really pretty straight forward and easy on this car, especially coming from the Lightning! My one tip would to be use a 5/8" spark plug socket with swivel extension built into it...it will really help with the plugs in the rear (for you that are **** like I am the torque specs are 133 in/lbs on the plugs and 62 in/lbs on the coils, I was able to torque 4 of the 6 couldnt make room on the rear side plugs on the right and left side). Otherwise it's not to difficult.

I was also planning on giving you guys some cross referenced plugs if you wanted to try something different but the only plug I could find was a Denso Iridium...ITV20..which is the factory heat range. I'm sure I could find a cooler and hotter plug from those guys...I'll look into it

Thanks for the info. I can't imagine how tough the plug change on the Lightning. I had a tough time doing the spark plug change on my 5.4...the rear plugs were almost impossible to get at, and I found that I had to remove the fuel rail to get at the driver's side coils and plugs. It must have been much tougher with the supercharger in the way.

Mark, I believe I told you about my '68 Shelby big block.....That SOB was a pain in the buttinski, big time, and no doubt. (Did I mention it was hard to do?):confused:

I think it was #7 -- back one on the driver's side that you practically had to stand on your freakin' head to get anywhere with.

I got thru it the few times I changed or cleaned the plugs in that car but I sure don't miss that chore. I miss the car
Anything but anything would be an improvement on that sucker.

No wonder they charged mega bucks to do it in the shop> they undid the mounts and lifted the ending --

Pardon going a little off topic but plug changing is an important part of maintenance ----- thankfully it doesn't have to happen very often with these new engines.......and I'm very pleased to hear that the SHO is fairly easy.

is this a recalled issue on these or is it just one of those "shity" batch deals,and is thier any improvment with the different plugs?

There is a TSB on it...my car has never had any of the symptoms but I thought I'd switch them out anyway. The car does seem to run smoother actually. Not sure if it really does though. My plugs looked great though and no evidence of any ceramic cracking

Me too, several of my friends have had many laughs because i torque my wheels.

LOL, perhaps they'll remember the laughs when they discover studs that are broken, discs that have warped badly & prematurely, and wheels that crack due to excessive torque on those wheel nuts.:rolleyes:

Don't feel badly Mark. I'm very explicit about what torque I want on wheel nuts and what I expect to find when I take them back off for some reason -- If I have to leave it at a shop -- (doesn't happen very often).

I always torque my wheels. Especially after any shop has had the wheels off. Often I find them ridiculously tight. And I torqued the plugs in my GT500 when I changed them. Thanks for the specs.

Anyone have the gap specs for the CYFS-2Y-3 plugs that the TSB calls for?

I had to have mine replaced per the TSB. All of a sudden, it wouldn't keep running. I suppose the ceramic broke off on #1, the cylinder that came up under question on the monitor when I had it flat bedded in.

Hmmm, think I'm going to replace mine before one ends up in the cylinder!

Just had all of my plugs mine replaced with the TSB and it ended up being the #6 injector was failing, so that was swapped out too. So far, so good.
