Has anyone tried this clutch with a blower SHO? Is it worth the $465 or is there a cheaper and better alternative? THANKS! :thumb:

I take it you are looking for an alternative to my 4-puck full metallic disc I have? :)

Eric i tried looking for just a Pressure plate that would be good for 300-350 hp at the wheels and i couldn't find one except in a kit. I have a kit that will support up to 450 :thumb:

I believe Pat tried it in his blower car (might have been Gary M) and it would not hold the power.

My SHO hasn't been out of the garage in 2 years, so it wasn't me.

It was Panama Pat. IIRC, it was a 4 or 6-puck with semi-metallic on the FW side and Kevlar on the PP side with a single diaphragm pressure plate. It slipped.

Kevlar friction materials require horrific amounts of clamp load to work well, and their coefficient of friction tends to decrease as they get hot, which (IMO...) is an undesirable characteristic for a clutch lining. I doubt you'll get blower-level torque reliably through a Kevlar lining with a single diaphragm pressure plate.

If it is the same disc design as the clutch they provided, a 6 puck disk with kevlar pucks on the pressure plate side and metallic pucks on the flywheel side, then I can confirm that it did not work well for my application.

The pressure plate just did not provide enough pressure to deal with the kevlar side and the result was a slipping clutch. Perhaps they have redesigned it since then, but I suspect that without changing to a heavier diaphragm, it will not work well on blown or nitrous SHO's.

South Bend was a great company to deal with in terms of customer service, but unless they changed their design, you may trouble with high power SHO's.

Some links to pictures after removing the clutch a month later:

Again, no complaints with the service they provided after the sale. I'd just be sure that they have done something to increase clamp load if they are still using kevlar on one side.

Gary - you need to get that supercharged beast out on the road!!!

I hear there may be a double disc clutch on the market out there for the SHO's.

What do you guys think about a metallic/ceramic 6 puck with a HD pressure plate (stronger straps, more rivets, and different diaphram)? The company i ordered it from said it was good up to 450 hp. :burn_out:
