I was wanting to replace the above, but, as I'm probably not the first to find out, getting them is hard. Sho Nut Performance, and Bizzy on the forum here, both have blocking rings but Sho Nut, at least, is running out. Both have 3rd-4th and 5th synchros, but not 1st-2nd. Bizzy can get me a used 1st-2nd. So I guess all I'm really in need of for is a new 1st-2nd synchro. I guess I was hoping, though, for a source closer to Portland for all of it, and I'm concerned for the future if the supply is so finite. Was ours the only car that used the MTX IV?

Would it be worth putting in a used synchro? Wouldn't that be like putting in a new clutch disk? Can they be reconditioned somehow?

thanks

There may be a few new 1-2 synchros out there but expect to pay a lot for them. As long as the teeth on the synchro are OK a used one will work fine. The blocking rings are the wear items so unless the tranny has been grinding for a long time you can usually get away with just replacing the blocking rings.

As Mitchell said, the blocking rings are the main wear items unless the tranny has been grinding for awhile which ends up wearing on the synchro itself.

To answer the question you asked in an email, no, I don't rebuild the synchros that I offer for sale used. I do however take them apart and give them a thorough cleaning. If they're overly worn, I just save the usable parts for other synchros and pitch the bad parts.

If you really want a new 1-2 synchro I can go on a hunt for you to find one. I'm fairly certain I could put my hands on at least one. And just for the record, I don't blame you for wanting new ones, that's what I would choose if I had to make the choice again as well. ;)

Is the symptom of a bad synchro only that it grinds? With my tranny (before the clutch et al went south), a few seconds of pushing were required to get it to slip into gear. Could that be a synchro, or just the clutch/TOB/PP?

Yes, this could be. But you must remember that if the TOB/PP aren't allowing a proper release, the more you force the trans into gear the more damage to the internals you are doing.

Ok, now Beth is bringing back 6-month-old posts. I wonder if the bread in her breadbox made for a tasty penicillin sandwich this afternoon! :laugh_ti:
