I was checking out the Solaris 9007 light bulb that is 100W hi beam and 80W low beam. They are listed as Super Extreme HID bulb on web page .

I have a feeling that in order to use this high wattage light bulb, it is important to change the vehicles wiring with larger gauge wires. I spoke with their sales person on the phone and he stated that they never had any problems with the bulbs being put on vehicles with stock wiring except Volkswagens. Any input on this?

they sell a harness where you connect it to power ground, your stock headlamp harness, and the bulbs. Works awesome, costs about $60, and installs in an hour MAX.

The reason they don't have problems is that car makers usually configure the headlight wiring so that you can't put in an aftermarket bulb and have it draw more current. they will work, but they will either have the same wattage or less than the wattage the car was designed for. The harness not only allows you to use higher wattage bulbs, but it might also save your MFS from failure.

i had one in my 89 thunderbird... 80w lows, 100w highs, and brights turned on all four bulbs. the harness handled it just fine, the wires weren't even warm.

I will tell you right now, you must replace the harness!! Even if I'm an isolated case, it will be a major pain if things end up going wrong. I installed higher wattage bulbs on my '92. After replacing the harnesses twice, I went back to the stock wattage. Too late. Running the extra wattage had eventually fried my high beam switch in the steering column. I lost use of my low beams.

Being the lazy butt that I am, I aimed the beams down and went around using high beams for a couple of weeks. Eventually the switch totally burnt out and I had to replace it. Way too much headache for a very small difference in performance. Like it's been said, you really need to get new lenses for any real improvement.

Oh yeah, the occasional smoking action eminating from the steering column at 1AM in the middle of the Berkshires, 100 miles away from home is not, should I say, a comforting feeling. boink
