alright so i have had this ticking noise for a while and i automatically assumed it was valve tap. then i read a post last night about a ticking noise and people said it could be timing tensioner or cam chain tensioner and that u can listen with a screwdriver. now i dont know how to listen to things with a screwdriver but i can probably guess how to. but just to rule out possibilities the noise goes away when i disengage the clutch (push pedal in). also, tap speeds up in higher rpms and often goes away as rpms get high enough. any info would be great. thanks

If it's going away when you push the clutch down, it's not the motor.

Now my tickign isnt very lound but I cant hear it until i get to abotu 3k-4k rpm and then it soorta "goes away" but mayeb jsut gets drowned out my the engine and exhaust noise.

oh and the screw driver thing, just take a screw driver a big one to get in there and put the tip on the valve cover, (being carful not to scratch it) and put your ear to the end. yould hear the parts in the heads operating if you hear it making noise uniform your fine but if you hear a tapping or something you can pinpoint it. Put the screwdrive over every cylinder and youll be able to get an idea of where the sound is comming from. And you know if somehting is tappign such as a valve becasue it will be loud.

more rubber, more HP.....
If you have a Spec clutch, then thats whats causing the ticking. Basically it's the pressure plate rivets banging into the tranny bell housing. Spec rivets have thicker heads than stock so there is less clearance. Next time you pull the tranny you can see tiny grind marks at 6 o'clock and 1 o' clock if I remember correctly. What I did was grind down the rivet heads 1-2mm and the ticking goes away. It will probably go away or get better with time anyway as the rivet heads grind off material from the tranny housing.

check to see if the noise stops when the secondaries open up?
revv the engine up past 4K if it stops when they open, then you vac. canisters are making the noise.this is a common problem on the 3.0L.however the symptoms make me think its a TOB

I just installed my spec clutch last night and it did the exact same thing ... got me real worried until I did a search and found this thread. glad to know it isnt something serious. My girlfriend was actually the one who heard it first, she was standing out side the car. its never good when you just do a big job (clutch install) and someone says "whats that noise"? lol

If I rest my foot barely on the clutch pedal I get the same thing. The noice transfers up the cable into the car. If I take my foot completely off the pedal or disengage completely it goes away. As LeddZepp8687 says it's comming from the throw out bearing. mine's new along with the clutch. Guess I have to live with it.

I have the exact same noise has originally described in this thread, where the noise goes away when the clutch is pressed in. Very loud ticking up to about secondary time as well. I have another thread about this too, and my clutch was done just a few months ago too, seems like a new clutch job may create this symptom. Anyway, about the vaccum canisters, how would they make noise?
