I did a search and may have found my answer, but I'm not sure. I think the clutch is fine on the SHO but after going to N and back to 1st, it wants to stop halfway and if I give it a slight bit of force it goes into gear. The car still shifts fine but gives me resistence everytime I go into first. Also, when going into R, I realize you have to move the shifter to the left and maybe into a forward gear. Most of the time this works great, but sometimes it won't go into gear and I have to repeat the process a few times. Otherwise, driving around town it shifts great in all other gears; just those 2 issues.

Does this mean something mechanical and expensive is going? or does it mean I need to do the "IV transfusion" method of draining and replacing the tranny fluid? Hopefully # 2 will solve the problem since it's cheper and easier. I have one of those oil evacuator pumps to siphon the fluid out. I can use the same tube with a funnel to refill if need be.

It seems (and I have no personal experience with this, cos I own two ATXs) that the manuals are quite picky about their tranny fluid. I have seen people have these same issues, and more, and have them all be solved by switching tranny fluid.

I can't remember what most of them liked, I wanna say synchromesh? I might be way off.

Also, I don't think that Reverse has a synchro, which is why you have to put it in 1st first. For the very brief time I owned an MTX I had this same issue. Wouldn't want to go into reverse.

throw it into 2nd or 4th before you put it in reverse.
it aligns the gears

some are picky with fluids and some arent be it the internal wear or not
my 92 would take any fluid
where as my current 95 only likes the valvoline high mileage stuff

Mine has the same resistance going into 1st, I find that its easier to quickly pull into 2nd which stops the gears, then into first in a back-forward motion, this way it spreads the synchro wear out over 1st and 2nd which is the reason 1st is so hard for you now.

That's exactly what I usually do. My brother even commented and asked why do I go from N to 2nd to 1st at a stoplight. When slowing for the light, I brake and throw the car in N rather than sit there with the clutch to the floor. Then I do the 2nd to 1st shift on the green light. It seems to work well but was just wondering if maybe I needed to change my fluid.

when I got my 95 it shifted so bad into first and third I thought I needed a new tranny. It turns out the ATF had never been changed in 130,000 miles. So I put in a drain plug and tried valvoline max life atf first and loved it. It took a few hundred miles to get better but worked great. I have mobil1 in now and don't like it a bit so I'll be changing back to max life here soon. And in case you want to know here is how you do the drain plug which is way easier then the siphon method IMHO.

Go to NAPA, get Valvoline Dex/Merc ATF, and change the fluid. Within 1,000 miles your shifting will improve significantly. See product feedback section for more on this ATF.

As much as I like the SHO Im going to say the MTX-IV is pretty hopeless when it comes to gear shifting smoothness.

it's no bmw, but it can be better then most experience. There are a combination of things that can make them shift bad, for starters a worn TOB, or old clutch cable, and fluid does play a huge roll in how they shift.

personally i hate them.. they are too weak, the shifts are slow and difficult compared to other trannies. also, why doesnt my shifter go back into the 3-4 gate when im in neutral and i let go.. it stays in what ever gate i put it in like 1-2 3-4 5-R..

Anybody try any type of lucas oil in their mtx's ?

Lucas, Mobil 1, all of that stuff is a waste of time in the SHO. Been there done that. Just get the Valvoline and you'll be happier with the shifting than before.
