so yesterday I was bored so i was looking for things to do so I decided to tackle my sloppy shifter. I have the cable type (unfortunately), and the grommet are very hare to find. Well both of mine are broke to shift forward and back. Obviously I cant find the grommet so I rigged it up so that it was tight. Ive been having problems shifting, I thnk that was one of my problems. Its still a little hard to get into certain gears, so do you think I messed up the syncros, blocking rings, or PP and TOB.:sun:

Replacement plastic grommets for the cables are not available. I used the Mopar clip fix for the one by the shifter, and a zip tie for the one at the trans, and works fine going on 6 years now. Nothing wrong with the cable shifter; I have the cable only STS short shifter and prefer it over the rod since it is 15 lbs less weight, is not in the way underneath, and does not transmit any vibrations at all to the shifter handle like the rod does (this is very noticable if you have reinforced motor mounts, AL SFB's etc...)
Trouble shifting is probably either a clutch, TOB, or trans issue; first thing I would do is change the fluid (Valvoline seems to work good for many on here)

i got it. I just drilled out the ball on the ball and socket on the inside of the car and then nut bolted and put a sleeve over the bolt so there was less play between the bolt and the socket. very easy and it will last a lot longer than the grommet. It was free to me i already had all the harware. But if anyone has this problem I will try to get piks let me know.

I designed a replacement Delrin 'grommet' and had a machine shop make a couple.

The ball snapped into the socket fine, because of the 4 slots cut into the part that snaps into the cable end. It's been working well for about 5 years.

Shifter slop was reduced by half.

Which gears and on up or down shift?

I have never driven a cable car but I would just try and save up for a rod shifter. There have been quite a few for sale lately. That is if you dont have to drive the car every day.
