When I'm in gear, sometimes when I open the throttle to accelerate, the engine revs higher, the rpm go up, but the car doesn't go any faster at first (!), but then I eventually accelerate. This transition is very smooth with no sudden jerking. You can't even detect it is happening except by hearing the engine rev higher and watching the tach dial increase.

Is the clutch slipping on the flywheel? If so, shouldn't I smell the clutch burning?

Do I need a new clutch? I'm almost to the floor on the clutch pedal but I can move through the gears with no problem.

Or is there something wrong with the transmission?

sounds like the clutch is about dead. if you slip it enough, it will smell - at which point it will be dead.

if you lift the clutch pedal to adjust the cable, you may get it to limp along for a while yet.
