Hey Everyone,

I have noticed lately my SHO is detonating ever so slightly at high rpms under a heavy load, like climbing a steep hill. I'm not really sure what the problem is, but I'd like to track it down with all your help if I can.

The car has been run on nothing but premium from Chevron and Union 76 from the time I bought it at 48K, the full 60K was performed right at 60K miles, and the car only has 99,750 miles on it right now. I have no "Check Engine" light and the car runs great, but I did run the codes. Here's what I came up with:
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">KOEO: 111
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">CONT: 211, 521
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">KOER: 542
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif"> I know Code 542 is a common code that's no big deal, but what is a "211 - PIP circuit failure" and a "521 - PSPS Circuit did not change states"? Could either of these codes be causing my detonation issue, or should I look somewhere else?

Any info would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

knock sensor.
Yes, that could be the culprit, but lets find out some more information before we start replacing parts. I would suspect the plugs or plug wires. How old are those? I'm sure someone else has some different ideas...

That 211 PIP (profile ignition pickup) circuit failure is the crankshaft position sensor (CPS or CKP). That can be more of a problem than some pinging. That sensor can shut your engine down like you turned off the ignition key. Plan on replacing it and possibly your timing belt, front main seal and even the water pump soon.

The knock sensor only generates a code during the KOER test if no signal is detected from the sensor during the goose test. Even then, there may not have been a knock event to detect. If you are hearing regular pinging, either the knock sensor isn't sending a signal to the EEC or the engine fuel, air and temperature conditions are beyond the scope of the available ignition retardation.

The knock sensor is below the fuel rails and requires the removal of the intake and fuel rails to access. Best done during a valve gapping service.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

It would seem odd that my plugs or wires need to be replaced, since they were replaced less than 40K ago with strictly Motorcraft parts. I could see maybe the plugs being bad, but I sure hope the wires haven't gone already!

The CPS was also replaced around this time, so I hope it isn't going bad already. The car hasn't stumbled or missed a beat in a long time...

I think I'll run some Techron additive on my next tank of gas and see if it takes care of the detonation problem. If not, I guess I'll have to begin rounding some new plugs and wires. :(

Thanks again!
