We've all seen the reverse indiglo white-face gauges from Procarparts.com (or if not: http://www.procarparts.com/store-detail.asp?sku=FD96TR-1306RGX). These gauges are available at the website above, or on ebay. I know that the prices with shipping are either $41 or $47 depending on if you buy from ebay or the site.
The problem (in my opinion) with these gauges is that they only cover up the stock gauges, so the dummy lights (warning lights, turn signals, etc.) have to be visible during the day in order for the lights to pass through. Plus you have to do some wiring during the installation, and the gauges just look too 'cluttered' to me.
That is why I took an alternative route. I contacted Scott at http://www.geocities.com/slhrbacek/SHOGauges.html. His e-mail address is [email protected].
He has two different styles of white-face gauges for the Gen 3: White Factory Style and White Large Text Style. You can see the difference by clicking on each of them on his site. I opted for the White Factory Style, simply because I like the 'factory' look of them and the simplicity of them.
You can have him do the SHO watermark (which I did) for free or even daytime/nighttime flames (which I didn't do) for extra cost. You can get the numbers/tick marks to glow in either green or blue. I chose blue.
The cool thing about these gauges is that they are actual replacements for the factory black ones, so you peel off the factory ones and stick on these new ones. This means that you don't have to see any of the 'dummy' lights during the day; they just shine through when you turn them on. And because they're direct replacements, you don't have to worry about any wiring; just stick on and go! Follow his instructions on the site (he also mails you a copy with your order) because they're very helpful.
After thoughts: The install was pretty darn straight-forward and was pretty simple. When you are ready to reinstall the gauge cluster, you need to let the car idle with the gauges connected and in place, and after about a minute or so, you then put the needles back on. This is important, because otherwise you'll never get the gauges in the right places. *Remember to put a little piece of masking tape on the bezel next to the needle and put a mark on it where the needle lies during idle and when the engine is shut off!
The gauges look SWEET! They're awesome during the day, and they're pretty good at night. The blue isn't as blueish as I thought, so don't be afraid to order blue just because the rest of your interior lights are green. The lights also don't glow quite as bright as stock, which has been mentioned before. I'll have to test more during the daytime and nighttime to determine if they're dim enough to make me replace the bulbs with brighter ones. This link tells about doing this: http://v8sho.com/SHO/WhiteFacesGaugesBulb Replacement.htm
Overall, a sweet-looking mod that leaves you with some gorgeous gauges to stare at!
Hopefully I can have some daytime and nighttime pics up of the gauges pretty soon.
