Is there any down sides to converting the rear section to just one muffler by removing the Y and just having one outlet? Less tq? less hp? would it hurt the motor?

There is a downside to repacing 2 mufflers. It will hurt your wallet more than replacing one muffler. Just did exactly that, saved money with no ill effects. Sounds better, too. But that might be the lack of a hole in the tail pipe now. 2 mufflers is just for looks.

So the car will be perfectly fine?

Would having no cats, and no muffler (pretty much a straight pipe with the resonator) cause sort of a bad gas milage scenario from lack of backpressure?

Loosing your cats and resonator AND muffler will decrease low end torque (no back pressure) and sound like complete ass crack.. it will sound like a hive of loud, angry bees are following you around. I would not recommend going with straight pipes..

My recommendations are a catted, high flow y pipe, larger mid pipe with the longests resonator you can find, and a good muffler. :) gl

Thats exactly what I have. ;) Sounds and works great!

At first I had the muffler shop leave the resonator out. After the shop started it, everyone was picking on the welder for doing something wrong. They said I needed a resonator to take away the offensive rasp. I said i cant afford it. They put it in no charge anyhow because they didn't want anyone knowing they put a cat back on a car that sounded that bad. True story. Marco Muffler in Orangevale, CA.

********. The effects will be so minimal that it if you were to dyno afterwords, any difference could be attributed to dyno error.

Agreed,backpressure is a myth.
It is all about the proper sizing of exhaust pipes to create a scavenging effect, both a good flowing system and a fast system are key.

its not the backpressure that helps the low end torque - its the reflected flow pulses that scavenge the exhaust gases better.

everyone on this forum believes in the value of intake tuning, i.e. the dual length intake runners that provide a 2nd torque peak when the secondaries open. well, the same thing applies on the exhaust side.

btw, I have dyno curves to prove that too large of exhaust reduces torque at lower rpms - not on a SHO (I'm smart enough to only make that mistake once....) but the principle is the principle.

If I redo my catback at some point I am seriously considering going with single exhaust. What size exhaust piping are people using for the single? Are they upsizing at all?

well I've been running around with one stock muffler cut off. Its now getting on my nerves. I've had this muffler sitting around off my jetta. It has a motorized butterfly valve inside of it to make it loud or quiet. Was thinking about replacing the missing muffler with it but keeping the stock one on the other side to make it hella quiet when it's closed. Dunno if I like the look of the tip sticking out. What do you guys think?

Heres what the muffler looks like:

On a stock SHO don't go ANY bigger than 2.5'' on the single portions and 2.25'' on the dual portions..

Again, just my .02

I think that belongs on a Honda.

I don't remember my question being "what car does this belong on?"

Anyhoot, this is not, by any means, a "fart cannon" If you close this thing up, it sounds as quiet as a stock exhaust with a *slight* rumble to it.

and the tip is too big?
it's about the size of 2, 2-1/4" tips next to each other.

2.25 is perfecr for the primaries Off the manifolds, but i know pleanty of N/A sho's that can utilyze a 3" exhaust. Including myself.

Do you think 3" would slow the exhaust gasses down too much?

I know 2.5" works well on most NA SHO's, but what about highly modded/cammed ones?
