it has been discussed, i believe a lot of people said your cat would not be nearly as effective due to the distance from the hot manifolds/heads.

its still a cat....

there are cars made with that kind of setup stock..... actually there have been many, many cars built like that.... from chevy's, to ford's, to honda's..... v6's, v8's, 4 bangers, fwd, rwd.... if that many cars can get away with it, you should have no problem.... especially if you go with a good brand high flow high effeciency cat..........

damn near all of the v6 fwd cars use a single cat type setup....... the only ones that come to my mind that have the cats like the Taurus, are the taurus, windstar, continental, and v6 Toyota/Lexus...

if a v6 honda can get a ulev rating with 1 cat downstream... then its gotta work good....

heres a performance v6 honda exhaust setup, i don't like the merge section though

compared to like a stock replacement type deal that goes to the stock manifolds....

2b 12

at the end of these pipes are where the converter would go...... notice the o2 sensor bung on each pipe... one there and one further back on the exhaust after the cat.... they don't use them on each individual downpipe off the manifold.... cheaper for sure...

My GTP has a single cat, I dont see why this setup wouldnt work for the SHO. At least you wont have to worry about a CEL as the 02s are before the cats. If you have to pass an emissions test....well thats where it might get tricky.

I had a custom single cat setup on my old 92. It was a hi-flow 2 into 1 cat for a dodge 360 v8. Before i did that set up i was running a stock y pipe, and when it was done i noticed a pretty good difference in response and power. So, it can be done cheaper, with what seemed to be the same effects. To that i say:thumb:

I think it will work, I know my sho's pass emissions with flying colors, I could double my emissions and still not be close to the legal limit. Also I am in jersey and they are pretty strict. Just make sure you mount it close enough, cats need ot be 7-800 degrees to work property IIRC.

I had a 97 Caddilac with the northstar V8 that only had 1 cat. I got a magnaflow high flow for it when I had to replace it. If that engine had no problem running with 1, you should be good. That may be a good one to check out. The part number is 23451. I paid like $125 for it but that was 2 years ago.

So long as you size the cat correctly you should be okay. If it is too far down stream though you might run into problems with it not heating up. So make sure it is close enough. Also if you have emissions they will be looking for 2 cats so you might not pass.

I paid 150 for the whole setup, thats with the cat, and mandrell bent pipes from the manifold to the flex pipe.

EDIT: I found a pic from when i took it off of the car.

So, what is "wrong" with a two small performance-type cat set up y-pipe for a SHO like the Dyno Max system? It's been working quite well for me on my '92 since I installed it about 5,000 miles ago....

Just cheaper at the time to go with one cat. Also not having to install it my self, as i have heard of fitment headaches with some of the y-pipes out there.

Well I can't be critical of the cost factor for you, but the 2 cat performance y-pipe I bought (through RCM) along with a matching resonator bolted right up at a local muffler shop (I don't have welding equipment).
