I bought this car two years from Toolman (who had gotten it from Shospazz92). It was (and is) externally in beautiful condition, and both Tim and Sam had wonderful luck with this SHO. Sad to say, I had the opposite experience; in the first few months I had the car, a whole bunch of its innards failed and were replaced, including:
Radiator
Water pump (replaced with brand-new Duralast, not remanufactured, with lifetime warranty)
CPS (also Duralast)
Timing belt (plus other belts and hoses for the bottom half of the 60k)
Alternator
Battery
Ignition switch
Cooling fan control module
ABS wiring
Along the way there were some other fun problems, too-- when the alternator went out, the **** switch tripped somehow, and it took two tows to the mechanic to solve that problem alone, because it kept inexplicably re-tripping. Even for a person who has owned two SHOs previously and is familiar with their repair costs, that was a lot all at once. (Toolman tried to help with diagnosing things as best he could, but there's only so much one can do from a distance.)
Unfortunately, the car still needs more work even after all that. It is loud as all **** in first and second and loses power on the low end of those gears-- my mechanic couldn't find the problem, and when I took it to Ford, they informed me that it was "a loose bolt or something" in the exhaust, which sounded rather odd as an explanation, but at that point I'd pretty much stopped driving it, so I didn't follow up on the matter. In addition to the loud rumble, first and second can also be a trick to get into these days-- the clutch hasn't slipped on me yet, but it's hard to throw in those gears. Maybe it's a linkage problem? At any rate, it requires coaxing, and sometimes I have to put it into third and then switch into first. On the upside, I've had a ready-made excuse never to let anyone borrow it. Finally, the air conditioning doesn't work, and I've never bothered to try to find out the reason. It could be something simple-- or not.
The car has been kept garaged in the winter, and outdoors in the summer, and has had all the regular maintenance you'd expect to have been done. When I bought it, Toolman put in new springs (Moog cargo coils) and new front struts (Monroe Sensatrac). The rear struts are Tokico. There were some other mods to the car-- I'm trying to find the original Shoforum classified ad for it, but I think it's been erased since it was two years ago.
Externally it's shiny and almost perfect. The car spent most of its life in Arizona and California, and it shows. There's a little line of dots on the right front side of the car, from what I'm told was a battery acid explosion before I got the car. Someone in a parking lot here put a tiny quarter-sized ding in the left front driver's side, near the hood. Someone else in a parking lot (gotta love Chicago) rubbed my rear bumper, but I think it's the kind of scuff that will wipe off with the right cloth. Overall the effect of the exterior is still impressive-- it gets ooohs and ahhhs from anyone who knows what an SHO is.
The interior I'd give a 6.5 out of 10, I guess. It's cloth with leather trim, and the housing for the driver's side seat adjustment buttons is cracked. It's got an aftermarket stereo with CD player. The front driver's side speaker needs replacing-- I was supposed to remember to ask Tim for one, but with all the other problems, I just forgot about it.
I'm asking $2000. There might be a little negotiation room, but I've dumped so much money into it that I can't go down too far, unfortunately. I'd very much like for the car to go to a SHO enthusiast who will have the good luck with it that its previous owners did. I know how wonderful a properly-running SHO feels to drive. Nonetheless, I also know I'd get a way better tax write-off for donating it somewhere than I will for selling it, and I do have to be careful about how much of a hit I could take on the asking price.
The reason I'm listing it right now, after having hung on to it so long thinking that one day I'd fix it, is that I'm moving out of the country. Preferably someone could pick it up either before next Friday, or September 25-28, as I'll be in town those days. Other days in September before the 28th might be possible as well-- you'd just have to pick it up from a friend of mine rather than me personally. I'll post some pictures tomorrow, but wanted to get the ad up since time is of the essence.
PM me if you're interested.
