For sale: 1995 silver mtx
148,*** miles

I bought this car two years from Toolman (who had gotten it from Shospazz92). It was (and is) externally in beautiful condition, and both Tim and Sam had wonderful luck with this SHO. Sad to say, I had the opposite experience; in the first few months I had the car, a whole bunch of its innards failed and were replaced, including:

Radiator
Water pump (replaced with brand-new Duralast, not remanufactured, with lifetime warranty)
CPS (also Duralast)
Timing belt (plus other belts and hoses for the bottom half of the 60k)
Alternator
Battery
Ignition switch
Cooling fan control module
ABS wiring

Along the way there were some other fun problems, too-- when the alternator went out, the **** switch tripped somehow, and it took two tows to the mechanic to solve that problem alone, because it kept inexplicably re-tripping. Even for a person who has owned two SHOs previously and is familiar with their repair costs, that was a lot all at once. (Toolman tried to help with diagnosing things as best he could, but there's only so much one can do from a distance.)

Unfortunately, the car still needs more work even after all that. It is loud as all **** in first and second and loses power on the low end of those gears-- my mechanic couldn't find the problem, and when I took it to Ford, they informed me that it was "a loose bolt or something" in the exhaust, which sounded rather odd as an explanation, but at that point I'd pretty much stopped driving it, so I didn't follow up on the matter. In addition to the loud rumble, first and second can also be a trick to get into these days-- the clutch hasn't slipped on me yet, but it's hard to throw in those gears. Maybe it's a linkage problem? At any rate, it requires coaxing, and sometimes I have to put it into third and then switch into first. On the upside, I've had a ready-made excuse never to let anyone borrow it. Finally, the air conditioning doesn't work, and I've never bothered to try to find out the reason. It could be something simple-- or not.

The car has been kept garaged in the winter, and outdoors in the summer, and has had all the regular maintenance you'd expect to have been done. When I bought it, Toolman put in new springs (Moog cargo coils) and new front struts (Monroe Sensatrac). The rear struts are Tokico. There were some other mods to the car-- I'm trying to find the original Shoforum classified ad for it, but I think it's been erased since it was two years ago.

Externally it's shiny and almost perfect. The car spent most of its life in Arizona and California, and it shows. There's a little line of dots on the right front side of the car, from what I'm told was a battery acid explosion before I got the car. Someone in a parking lot here put a tiny quarter-sized ding in the left front driver's side, near the hood. Someone else in a parking lot (gotta love Chicago) rubbed my rear bumper, but I think it's the kind of scuff that will wipe off with the right cloth. Overall the effect of the exterior is still impressive-- it gets ooohs and ahhhs from anyone who knows what an SHO is.

The interior I'd give a 6.5 out of 10, I guess. It's cloth with leather trim, and the housing for the driver's side seat adjustment buttons is cracked. It's got an aftermarket stereo with CD player. The front driver's side speaker needs replacing-- I was supposed to remember to ask Tim for one, but with all the other problems, I just forgot about it.

I'm asking $2000. There might be a little negotiation room, but I've dumped so much money into it that I can't go down too far, unfortunately. I'd very much like for the car to go to a SHO enthusiast who will have the good luck with it that its previous owners did. I know how wonderful a properly-running SHO feels to drive. Nonetheless, I also know I'd get a way better tax write-off for donating it somewhere than I will for selling it, and I do have to be careful about how much of a hit I could take on the asking price.

The reason I'm listing it right now, after having hung on to it so long thinking that one day I'd fix it, is that I'm moving out of the country. Preferably someone could pick it up either before next Friday, or September 25-28, as I'll be in town those days. Other days in September before the 28th might be possible as well-- you'd just have to pick it up from a friend of mine rather than me personally. I'll post some pictures tomorrow, but wanted to get the ad up since time is of the essence.

PM me if you're interested.

Guys, this is a no option 95 MTX and the body is very nice. I miss this car very much and if I didn't have 3 cars I would have picked this thing up like yesterday.

Sam, I wish it could come back to live with you, too-- maybe it misses the nicer weather.

Or I wish it were in good enough shape that I could justify shipping it over to Germany with me so I could take it out on the Autobahn. But alas....

Bring it with you as my 99 could use another SHO over here in Germany to do Autobahn runs with. Always better in pairs, that way if one breaks down the other might just get you halfway home.

Here are some photos. Sorry they're not good resolution-- I took them with my iPhone.

I use a medium-format film camera for anything I really want a good picture of, but I'll take digital photos using a friend's camera if there's demand for them. There are a couple of people coming to see it this week in person, which is obviously also an option if you're in the area and think you might be interested.

Sorry that it's an overcast and damp day here in Chicago! What appear to be streaks on the hood are reflections from power lines overhead.

Here, on the passenger side, I tried to capture the effects of the battery acid spray I mentioned, but it doesn't really show up at this resolution.

Rear view. The rub on the back left bumper, which I mentioned above, came off pretty much completely with a microfiber cloth.

Is this Shoaz's old car?

Doug

Yes it is. Eric was the original owner when I got it from him. The car was then sold to Tim and then to calexandre.

A couple of comments on the car. The clutch was replaced at 128,000 Miles, so it has less then 30,000 miles on it. The trans was rebuilt by beth at about 100k IIRC. I have a feeling the cars trouble getting in to 1st and 2nd have nothing to do with the clutch or trans, but instead the rod shifter. My dad broke the original one and a junkyard unit was sourced. The JY shifter was always loose compared to the original and needed new bushings. I'm confident that's whats causing the issues that she is describing.

For the power loss and "loudness", the car may need a new front motor mount. I always felt that it was kind of sloppy. I had meant to have it replaced when the clutch was done but a new MM could not be sourced in time. This car would need very little work to get up and going 100%. For the price I think its a great deal, I wish I could get it myself!

Sam, thank you for adding that additional information!

I'm leaving town tonight, returning next weekend, but if anyone wants to see the car while I'm gone, PM me; I'm leaving the keys, title, etc. with a friend who will show it for me.

Went to take a look. The car is really nice exterior wise. Interior is so so. Bt the engine noise made me nervous. I don't think you have anything wrong with the trans. It sounds great and went in and out great but there is something wrong there. Not sure if the entire backside exhaust needs replaced and it's what's screaming or if something in the motor is coming apart but it's just a terrible sound. Doesn't lose too much power but sounds like it's missing and spitting like crazy.

Thanks for letting us look though it's just too big a gamble to take for the money.

Ah, all this time I was looking for a PM, and didn't check this thread.

I'd invite anyone else who might be interested to come out and make his or her own judgment. The poster above might be correct, but I did have a local ford mechanic come look at it last Thursday (I advertised it there too because they always ask about it when I take it in). He drove it and didn't comment to me about what he thought was producing the noise, but he did offer me a deposit to hold it at full price until the second week in October. Unfortunately I can't do that as I'd have to pay parking and registration fees October 1, and if the car isn't gone by September 28 when I leave the country, it goes to charity. All this is to say that whatever is wrong with it, there's more than one opinion on its "riskiness," so please do not be deterred from coming to take a look. It might work put that it's not worth saving, but as it's never overheated, etc., it could be something relatively simple.

The lowest I can go on it (as i already conveyed to the previous poster) is $1750. I'm taking a hit on it compared to the tax credit from donation, but I'd rather see it go to another SHO lover than end up who knows where, if not junked. I wish I could let it go for less, but unfortunately that's the limit for me.

Argh, that does suck. Looks like it'll be headed to a charity on Wednesday. Wish I could justify paying another year's registration and another quarter's parking fees to hold it, but I just can't.
