Alright, searched this forum for any threads for vibration.

In the last couple of weeks I have been getting a slight vibration that shows up on Deceleration. Right now, I can't feel any vibration when I am accelerating, and the car is still shifting fine. To me I thought it felt like the TC was shuddering (fathers Ram just had the AT replaced and the TC was going for some time so I know what that feels like) but if the car is rolling and in neutral I can shut it off and the noise continues. Also had the thought that maybe it was just tire noise (with all the gravel on the roads for traction).

Current stats, 140-150k miles, unknown if original transmission. Has had the P1744 code since 8/2005 when I bought it. Has a tune by Paul. Car has always shifted ok for what it is, but has had some problems engaging the TCC. ATX Temps have been ok too (have the gauge).

Thoughts, Ideas, Experiences, Let me hear them.

Well just took it on about a 100 mile trip last night and tonight, and it still is making the vibration. Nothing really above about 48mph but it definitely appears when slowing. Tried to record an audio of it on my phone but could not figure that out.

It has a newer (1-2yr) axle but I need to get under the car. It was 0 last night and it currently is 10 out right now with a 5-10 expected over night. Rotating tires tomorrow night (TQ wrench is at school)

I am going to look at the Tie Rods too and anything else associated under the front end as I just had the front end worked on before Christmas.

warped rotor? Mine had one in winter at the time dad drove it but the brakes got super hot and then coldness of the warped them. Just a thought other than that tranny/weal bearings u may want to take a look as see if moisture got to the spindle and burned.

It really sounds to me like the CVs. When under acceleration pressure they are doing fine still, but under no push circumstances, they are rattling about. They are a wear item, and certainly do not last forever.

Just as a reference question for other people (an myself).. how long do CV half-shafts usually last?

I suspect there is a lot of variance. In my Sirocco I went through 2 sets of replacements over a span of about 290k miles, so under 100k miles per set. But the SHO is at 190k miles and still on the original set.

Yeah Drivers CV joint is the one I replaced. Did not see grease on the other side but will have it looked at ASAP.

Thanks Stephen.

Glad to be of help. The very good mechanic I always had working on my high miles VW suggested doing both at the same time, claiming that if one was bad, the other was likely going. He demonstrated this by showing me the wearing out sections of the one that was not yet having trouble compared to the one that had died and the new ones he was putting in. It was easily noticeable when pointed out.

Rock Auto shows that the SLO and SHO axles are not interchangeable.

It made too much noise for me tonight. Was about to go 40 miles to stay at my sisters and it was just too much. Not worth the risk anymore and don't want to damage anything else.

This should be interesting tomorrow at the repair shop here in town...

One side is unique to the V8 SHO and the other is common with the V6 ATX SHO.

For what its worth, this is a notorious problem on Audi and VW cars. With aftermarket axles, they are built/manufactured differently and cause all sorts of problems, one being a slight vibration, sometimes quite harsh. I have not tried anything except raxles on my car and am quite satisfied with them. Just a thought. By the way NESHO where are you located at? Im in Iowa, always nice to know where other enthusiasts are close by.

Here's the crazy thing, I took a school car to Omaha Saturday (~2002 Malibu) and I felt a similar vibration from 25-45. I must be bad luck.

Shop still hasn't looked at it. Will try again tomorrow. Depressing not being able to just get up and go somewhere out of town.

Drivers axle has a torn boot. Thanks to all who replied. Still waiting on the shop, noise keeps getting louder...
