Hello all, I am new to forum. I recently purchased a 94 atx with 70k. The 60k was done at 55k and trans rebuilt at 55 also. For the past few days car has been bogging off the line during hard acceleration. When i tried to start it the other day ,It would not crank! I tried another battery and alternator is fairly new.Any suggestions? No check engine light. THANKS!

We have the same SHO's except mine has 81xxx miles. Funny, because mine wouldn't start about an hour ago and I have 4 trouble codes. I held the pedal all the way to the floor as I turned the key over and it fired right up. Man this one moody car:laugh_ti: Let me know if it starts

Thanks, I tried that and no go. I am going to change the starter and see how that goes. Just don`t understand why it was bogging off line?

Does it click at all when you try to start it? You might try whacking the starter to see if that helps. If it does then the starter is starting to stick up. You might also check the voltage on the battery as well before you replace any parts.

It's hard to say about the bogging. Could be anything from a VSS starting to go to a plugged up cat. How does it take off from the line if you're driving normally? (Not hard acceleration)

I tried whacking the starter and voltage on battery is fine. When i try and crank it , it clicks once.As for acceleration ,it doesn`t bog if you gradually accelerate. I also noticed light smoke coming from the starter area underneath after attempting to start. thanks!

Ten to one, the smoke is coming from the positive lead to the starter and the click you hear is the solenoid firing. I had this problem with my old truck nigh on to 20 years ago, and I'm pretty sure that it was a bad starter. IIRC, it shorted internally, allowing current to flow freely and heat the positive lead up 'til it was hotter than a firecracker (I would strongly advise against grabbing that sucker  ).

As to why it's bogging, it could be plugged cats, crank cancer, bad sensors, or one of several other problems. I'm thinking it's probably unrelated to your starting problems.

Holding the gas pedal to the floor while starting activates the EEC-IV's "roll start" strategy; it severely leans out the mixture to prevent you from dumping raw fuel into the cats (IIRC, it shuts off the injectors). It's also useful for starting a flooded engine; I'd probably be looking for one or more leaky fuel injectors...

Remove starter and have it tested. Selonoids gone bad.

Check for oil in plug wells and a slew of other things for the bogging.

Could certainly be the solenoid here; my truck had a separate starter solenoid mounted near the battery, and the SHO's, IIRC, is on the starter, so there's a wee bit of difference between them. My SHO did lose its starter, but that happened a few years after my brother acquired it (and my shop manual).

Bad part about the SHO's starter and soleniod is that all the gunk and oil that runs down on it from the engine causes the solenoid to fail.
