I don't think the weight of the V8 is that much higher than the Duratec. Both the V8 and the 'tec are substantially lighter than the SHO V6. As far as size goes, the V8 isn't any wider than the Duratec, and it's just a few inches longer. Even if the V8 doesn't fit, I still think the Duratec would outperform the SHO V6 in such a light car where the weight difference would make a considerable impact on acceleration and handling.

this is a little out there but what about the mazada 6? it also has a 5sp manual and has the V6 tec so it is the same transmission bell housing, i'm sure with some time and a bit of money that would be one of the easier swaps.

The fc3s would be a great platform for either a v8 or v6 sho engine imo. Ive owned lots of rx7s and they have great handling, superb brakes and a platform that is second to none for the price range its in but i must confess especially after owning my 88 convertible rx7 that the engine just didnt have enough power to make it a blast to drive. I used to defend the rotory till kingdom come but now that i think about it id love to see a sho engine in one. The engine bay especially in the fc(86-91) is plenty large enough to fit a motor in. The only thing would be making sure the motor would sit low enough to clear the hood. I know that alot of lt1 swap guys if they do the motor mounts right can still use the stock hood. If an rx7 coupe chassis that was a gxl for instance with the 4 piston calipers and beefy suspension was used in the swap it would be one well balanced street car. I know arguements come up about throwing off weight distribution by doing that but in all honesty a rotory isnt that much lighter than a sho motor( i say much it could be 100 pounds or so). Its really just dependant on hood clearance. As far as the engine bay as itself its plenty large for the swap. I say go for it :thumb: you can get a decent coupe for dirt dirt cheap.

When I was into Merkur Xr4ti's I ran across a kit for the install of a V-6 SHO into an Xr4ti. There were a couple around. The hot swap was a twin turbo 300zx....It was called Scorch. An article in one of the mags had it ripping up several high dollar speed demons.

That was taken by me at Carlisle this year...

Twin turbo SHO 3.2 with a custom intake in a XR4Ti.. Nice to see these motors ina north-south layout... Coil on plug and a Wolf EFI system.

Bellhousing on the Duratec 6's and the V8 are not identical, but they are at a basic level what I would call "interoperable" with light modification not all holes are common and only one dowel location is.

But reality check here. I love my V8's but they are 1996 technology, and with Variable Valve timing the 3.0 'tecs have now I dont' see how the V8 would improve performance much at all. They (V8's) certainly sound better however....

I've got one of the Mazda 6 trannies (A65M-R) roughly fitted to the V8 in my garage now, need to get the flywheel and clutch semantics worked out, I am going the opposite way of what you suggest above.

I have one of them set asside for a jet boat project. I bought a 74 Sunkist jet-boat w/a blown (not super charged) 454 and figure that the little 6000 rpm 3.4 would be an excelent candidate and better engine than the 454. With a boat, it`s all about the RPMs. The wet headers, engine mounts, and backplate are being welded up as a write this. I hope to hit the lake in the spring w/this project. As of right now, the only issue I foresee is programing, but w/todays tuners, I feel I can overcome that small issue.
