Well, day two into SHOness once again. In between driving from my parents in MI back to GA. A few hundred miles into the trip I notice the car sounds like it's a diesal now. It's a noticeable, but soft tapping noise at idle. It can't be the rod bearings again can it? :oogle:

Original bearings on this motor were good.

Ascertained that the sound is coming from the top of the motor. Sound is apparent at idle, doesn't get louder with speed.

sounds like a timing chain tensioner to me, hey denny i can drive my car out there if you're in town and let you hear what mine sounds like, and see if it's the same.

Well Chris, didn't make it down to ATL, well with the SHO that is.

TBT? Timing Belt Tensioner? Nope, timing belt was nice and tight.

Maybe it was the chain on the other side? Maybe the motor toasted a valve? Maybe the motor spun a bearing? Not sure. No oil light came on, but the SHO lost power, started up one more time, but then after that...nothing. :oogle:

same answer: TBT on your 3.2 motor. That is if you use the 3.2 tensioner. If they fail, the diesel sound is very apparant on the #1 cylinder. goes away when you rev it above 2500.

Otherwise, use the screwdriver listen method to see which tensioner has gone bad.

I don't think you can use the 3.2 hydraulic tensioner on the MTX swap... but my spring loaded MTX timing belt tensioner was fine. It was either the chains on the other side of the motor or something like a valve or a piston dropping.
