I just bought a 1992 MTX SHO, I got it for a good price, and I kne.w beforehand that there were mechanical problems with it. Before I take it in to be fixed, I was wondering if any of you could give me a general idea of what the problems are beforehand. My main concern is a clanking noise whenever I put the acclerator down hard at low RPMs. I have to let the clutch out at 3-4000 RPMs at lights just to not get the noise. Also, my radiator fan seems to occasionaly shut itself off, and the engine gets hot quickly. Any general advice would be greatly helpful. Thanks

Clanking??? Sounds like some bad rod bearings? You shouldnt let the clutch out at those kind of rpms. As for your car heating up its prolly the t stat.

Oh yeah, the noise is originating from what seems just inside the front drivers side wheel well. There is a lack of power as well.

A good place to start would be to run a code test to see what the computer is reporting. Instructions for doing so can be found at www.shotimes.com. How many miles are on the car? Have you atleast checked the oil and other fluid levels? Does the clanking occur when the car is in neutral and idleing?

To clarify, the sound is less of a metal on metal clanking as more of a backfiring noise. I have a suspicion that it has something to do with the cat. As an aside, how will my power be affected if I go to a muffler shop and have the cats removed and replaced with straight pipe. I am under the impression that it will increase horsepower, but decrease torque.

Give the cats the "broomstick" or rubber hammer (preferred) test.

You probably have either a loose heat shield or a disintegrating cat.

Maybe. That popping kind of sound also can indicate a timing issue

You are correct that you will lose more of the low-end torque that our SHOs are allready lacking. Tap the cats with a broomhandle. If it sounds like some pennys rattling around in a coffee can, then you know your cats are bad.
