this topic doesnt really fit into any of the other message boards so I thought I would give it a go here. I would like to know what the proper way to shift a high performance MTX transmission when under full throttle. I have driven high performance cars before but never a MTX. Today I was rodding the old SHO and ran it to 6500 in first shot the clutch down and put the car into second giving the car about a half secod time to let the revs down and then I just pretty much dropped the clutch. it chirped the gear but just feels like there is no way that it can take much of this. I did it all the way through third gear so I did this to my tranny twice and have been worrying about it all day. s there a way I can shift under power while still not grenading my tranny?

When I get on it from a dead stop. I take 1st up to about 5 1/2, clutch...second immidiately...dont pop the clutch too fast, give it like a 1/2 a sec to engage then get back on it...then take 2nd up to about 5, do the same thing and then you are doing the speed limit by then...3rd gear will take you to about 100 if you stay on it

Be careful about power shifting...practice your timing..timing is everything

Then again, I could be doing this all wrong and breaking my car while I'm at it...I've had this one for almost a year and I've got on her many many times, and I grinded 1 time so far, the clutch slipped 1 time (power shifting) and other than that...car runs/shift smooth

I hope I'm not jinxing my self, but I spin em in second every other day or so...I think I have a method to my maddness (perfect timing, nothing getting screwed up shrug )and c'mon....its my winter SHO...I can beat her up a little....she likes it...she told me so!

your driving practice sounds like somehting I should try. I am really sorry I did that to my SHO but I had a friend in the car and he wanted to see how fast a SHO was. I wish I hadnt done it Im an idiot. By the way since I did drop the clutch rather violently and the car did buck a little, what owuld give out in a tranny like the SHO's. Does the whole tranny get fried or did Ford build in any sort of a safety net for idiot drivers who cant drive a 5spd without acting like a ******* like me

Hey now, dont be so ******* your self...I'm 20 years old over here...you should have seen me the first time behind the wheel of my 89 MTX...first thing I did was stalled! Talk about feeling dumb...Then I accidently smoked the tires leaving the lot on the test drive thumbs_u ,

It takes practice my friend...it took me a good 2 weeks to get the full hang of it. And beleive me, I know what it is like to SHOw off the SHO power. Most people are like "Taurus" yeah right, I'll smoke that thing with my civic or grand am or some shit like that. Then they are like "what!!??" "did it come stock like that"

As far as the tranny question...I'm not mechanic, but I think the #1 thing that goes on the trannies is the differential, then throw out bearings, flywheel etc...

The recipe for quick acceleration is to keep the engine in the strongest part of the power band. On the SHO, that means to keep the revs around the 6,000-6,200 range as much as possible. This is where the engine can produce the greatest amount of work.

Shifting short of 6,800 - 7,000 does not allow this to happen. Shifting at 5,500 certainly does not even keep the secondaries open after the shift. That is "short-shifting" a high revving multi-valve engine. The SHO engine lives to breathe. Rev it to 7,000 and shift. That drops the revs to around 5,000 - 5,500 and allows the engine to stay near the power peak as much as possible.

You can search on this subject in various topics on this board to find some of the previous discussions we have had. Short shifting was never a solution for quick acceleration.

I agree highly with sdpatt. I also want to add that 3rd gear will take you higher than 100. I was at about 110 and 6000 RPM the other day. thumbs_u

2 weeks? Who are you kidding. 5 speed is a science. There are all sorts of driving variations and techniques that take time to master. Downshifting and rev matching take some time to figure out. There are so many different 5 speed styles to learn. I don't think a 5 speed ever gets old. Powershifting is something I refuse to mess with due to stock clutch, mounts, and tranny.

I'm about 6 months into the 5 speed game. I can't wait till I get my new motor mount. I'll attribute my newbieness to some of the wear, but my friends are 10 times worse. I tried to teach a friend how to drive and they were just god awful. Then I have a friend who'll just rag out my shit even after I tell him the mount is bad and to go easy. He thinks he's the most skilled driver in the world yet he brags about how he could only use a solid front motor mount on his vw because all the others broke in a few days due to his car's immense power. What do you think? Where the **** is the respect these days? Looks like someone has lost driving priveledges in my car.

When I shift at 5500 rpms it is when I'm "getting up and going"...When I'm at the track or at the light next to a competitive car, I take it to 6500-6800 before I shift.
