I know the Tranny is good because the car still goes, but I only have 3rd and 4th gears. No reverse either. I think maybe the cable slipped off because the shifter just moves around the entire space between 1st and 5th gears. Thank god I have the day off tomorrow, maybe I can fix this. It's not fun pulling away from a stop light in rush hour traffic in 3rd the entire time. Plus, I can imagine what this is doing to my clutch.

ANyway, is there a way to fix this if the cable is just slipped or do I have to get a tranny rebuild? Money is tight, so the cable would suit me better evil_gri

Thanks for any help anyone.

Crawl under the car and check it out. If it's a cable shift and the cable popped off, put it back on. If it is a rod shifter, check it to see if anything looks loose or broken. Sounds like a cable to me though. You might try a zip tie to ensure it stays on, just don't get it too tight.

Yeah, It's a cable shift (Dec 90)...I hope that's all it is....although getting under it won't be fun...it's been raining and snowing for 2 days.

its a quick fix, but it may happen again. just be gentle until you can replace the ball, or find a way to keep it from coming off. i rigged up some zip ties to mine and it never happened again.

well, do I have to take anything apart or anything to get to this? I've only had the baby since last May and although I have looked under it enough to know where everything is, I'm scared of doing something wrong and then needing like $600 to fix a screw up.

Anyway, thanks everybody so far...made me feel a little better.

You can see it from underneath where the cable connects to the gearbox, just lift and support your SHO first. There is a more permanent fix involving a Mopar clip that holds the cup on the ball, you'll have to do a search. I was planning to get it myself but my wiring fix is still holding. Btw I also placed some zip ties there for more support like fuhSHO.

The ball did pop out. No wonder it was replaced with a rod shifter soon after my car was made. Seems like a chintsy POS to have on a car like this.

Anyway, problem solved. Thanks for the help everyone. Esp fuhSHO, and Sho_Driver. Made my day. Now I can pay rent instead of spending it on the car (have to sometimes, ya know?)
