Allright, I have found that when needing to shift into reverse when the car has just been started. If I shift from 1st to 2nd 2 or 3 times, then shift from neutral to left and right (left being neutral between 1st and 2nd and right being between reverse and 5th) 2 or 3 times and then shift into reverse that I have no grinding whatsoever. Can anyone else confirm this? By the way I do have a new clutch from pp and until I figured this out I would get an occasional grind going into reverse.

half-way there, I think.
The reverse gear in the SHO does not have a syncro. You are shifting into reverse properly by shifting into a forward gear then into reverse.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one that has the problem with reverse. There's a lot of comfort in knowing your tranny is performing normally despite the sounds it makes... thumb

I'll have to make a habit of shifting it right.

Shifting into another forward gear (other than 5th - it has a reverse gear interlock) while the car is stationary prior to moving the shifter into reverse will stop the main shaft from spinning and allow the non-synchronized reverse gear to be selected without grinding. The extra shifter motion you described is not necessary. Just shift into 2nd then move the shifter into reverse without releasing the clutch.

I use 5th gear, it works just fine. I do not get locked out. Are you sure the reverse lockout doesn't occur at speed? shrug

I agree w/ Scott. 5th gear has the lockout. I cannot go from 5 to reverse regardless of the circumstances. Perhaps something is wrong with your lockout?

Yep. There is a spring loaded slide that slips into the shifter "H" gate after shifting into 5th to prevent the direct motion from 5th into reverse. This is a simple mechanical mechanism with no speed related input. If your interlock doesn't prevent the motion from 5th to reverse then it is not functional. The spring may have been damaged or lost during a transaxle service or it may have broken or worn out. You are now the only interlock to prevent the 5th-reverse shift. Careful.

I should have added that I go to 5th gear, take it out and wiggle it in neutral, then go into reverse. I cannot go directy from 5th to reverse. I don't grind when I do the above thumb

Yah..I use 5th too..can't go straight from 5th to reverse..gotta let it go to the neutral range between 3 & 4 and then to reverse.

OT: I should get my car back today w/ new clutch!
