A little background: About a month ago I noticed that the shifts became weird. I took it to the dealer, did a trans flush, calibration update and trans values erase. Since then I drove another 1k miles and it's been getting better overall.

But a few days ago I had a rental Jeep and I realized that I could not even notice the shifts in that thing, unlike my own car.

So it made me think, I can't remember how this car shifted when I bought it. Please tell me if what I describe is normal or I do need to have it looked at?

During minimal throttle and very low speeds, like stop and go traffic it shifts through first 3 or 4 gears at very low rpm and every shift is felt. Shifts are not hard but you can feel like a slight pulling forward for a moment during the shift.
During normal or hard acceleration the shift points are at higher rpm range and shifts are very nice and smooth even though you can still feel them.

Occasionally when slowing down to a crawl somewhere under 10 mph, and then accelerating it engages a little harder than normal. I think it only happens at very specific speed. A little slower or faster and it will be nice and soft. I think it always did this and my previous Ford had the same behavior.

Sometimes when going downhill with very gentle throttle I get a hard upshift around 40 mph.

Does all this sound about right?

Sounds about like what my 2013 did and my 2016 does. The 2016 is a little more aggressive about getting out of 1st at a low RPM. There's definitely a lot more "feel" of the tranny shifting in this car than any others I've owned unless they were tuned.

But I can definitely feel it shifting.

When I drive like a "grandpa" I hate how long my SHO holds first gear....drives me crazy.

OP, is the shifter in Drine or Sport when it downshifted like that? I know when I had/have my 2013 or 2016 in Sport, it downshifts on a downhill if the car is accelerating more than it "thinks" it should.

Yeah, mine was like that. The 2016 in my opinion, goes TOO fast into 2nd. Although I haven't noticed it in a while.

It's in drive, and I meant the upshift. Not downshift.

Just wondering, what kind of Jeep did you rent? If it was one of those older compass, they have a CVT you definitely wouldn't feel any shifts. If it was a greand cherokee those use the zf 8 speed, which is arguably the best torque converter automatic out there.

It was a brand new wrangler sahara. No idea what kind of transmission it had but I assume not cvt.

I have not cared for the throttle/shift schedule in any drive by wire FMC car I've driven. I commute 50 miles round trip in heavy traffic and felt the trans was clunky and the numb drive by wire throttle didn't help either. The tune made a big difference in stop and go traffic. LMS has a soft shifting tune I have not tried but my standard 93 tune does shift firmer than stock which I am fine with but the transition from coasting, braking, and light throttle is smoother and less clunky.

That is the ZF 8 spd

I will def consider a tune when budget allows. For now I just wanted to make sure that it's a normal behavior and not something starting to go.

I’ve a,ways noticed mine is clunky in stop and go, especially third gear. When driving aggressively it fires off shifts firmly - which I like. So there’s definitely more feel but I don’t think it’s a bad thing.
