I was driving last night down the highway (in 5th) and was coming up to my turn and slowed down and down shifted...but my shifter was very "loose" and wouldn't come out of 5th. I pulled into a parking lot and took the center console apart and it looked like it was still attached. I went under the car and everything seemed fine. I pulled the rod and felt it go into 5th and 4th but I couldn't really get a good enough grip for any other gears. When I moved the rod the shifter stayed still so I am assuming that the linage in the black box is broken (forgive my lack of terminology). It was dark and I didn't have a flashlight so I couldn't really mess with it. I just left it in 4th and drove home...slowly. I was wondering if anyone could help.....with diagnosis and a step by step to fix it. I am moderately mechanically inclined....and have friends that are better than me. Is this something I could tackle myself or leave to a mechanic?

Thanks,
Anthony

Turns out I broke the end of the rod that connects to the shifter. I got it welded and reinforced and its better than new!
