My 93 ATX is my first car, and within about 3 weeks i blew the stock subwoofer. I looked here and people told me that putting in an 8" sub or even 10" wouldn't be much trouble. I know how to install sound systems, and wanted to do it instead of trying to cut out the stock box, and power a jl 8w0 that i found online. Would the stock amp be able to handle it? Or would I be better off just replacing the entire system. Money isnt really an issue, because i have all the things that i would need from my uncle when he changed the system in his car. What i was wondering was is it gonna take a lot of time and work to rip out all the stock wiring, amps, and headunit?

I wouldnt even attempt to run the JL off of the stock amp. It really isnt a difficult job to take out the stock stuff, I would replace it all if I were you but its just my opinion. :thumb:

Nor would I try to run it on the stock amps. You can run an aftermarket amp with the stock cd player ( if thats what you have) with a little deal that gives you 2 outputs for amps. I picked one up at a local stereo joint (about $40). I'd go with 2 12" jl's, orions, or I even had a couple infinity's that sounded nice in my SHO. Just don't get some cheap wholesale subs. You get what you pay for.

You'd probably want at least 300 watts per sub. The stock amp isn't gonna cut it. I don't think it puts out more than about 75 watts.

Fellas, you're talking big bass. What's more important here is what HE wants in his car. Is he looking for SQ? SPL? Is this just about being loud? You can do almost anything, and for some subs, the stock JBL will push them just fine. So how about we ask him what he's after, and then start throwing solutions at him?

Yea if your getting a sub that doesn't require more than about 50 watts RMS, the stock JBL amp would do fine. But underpowering a sub is not a good idea. So, I suggest finding a stock jbl sub, or find a bigger amp and sub

I wanted to try to keep the stock setup, because i really dont have the time to rip everything out and start again. I was looking for a stock jbl subwoofer at first, but didnt have any luck in finding one. The one thing that i wanted to do was to buy a jl 8w0 that i found online from a store called tweeter for only 70 buck, but its an 8" and i really dont wanna have to go through all the trouble to cut the stock 6.5" box, because I dont wanna go through all the trouble if i soon decide to sell the car or if after i find a stock subwoofer. I dont wanna get another stock subwoofer because if it is going to blow out as quickly as mine did, i think that it is kinda worthless to try and look for one.
