I'm replacing the passenger side axle tomorrow. I removed the old one and bought a new one today, but the new one only goes from the bearing that bolts to the motor to the hub. there seems to be a c-clip holding the axle to the halfshaft but i can't get it off. am i doing it right or is there some other way to get it off/on?

Impact slide hammer and a CV axle puller.

It often takes the shock of the slide hammer to compress the cir-clip so it will release.

Sometimes you can pop them loose with a crowbar and a solid tap on the side of the joint.

Be careful pulling against the carrier bearing on the intermediate shaft. That mount bends under the load requried to pull the CV halfshaft from the intermediate shaft. I have positioned myself under the car and used a pry bar (or large flat tipped screwdriver) to wedge between the bearing's outer metal structure and the large coupling on the CV halfshaft. It will "pop" out when given enough force.
