I sucessfully installed a second gen JBL tape deck and slave CD player in my
'90 this weekend. To all who said it could not be done: :p :p .
First: I had to shave off the lip on the black dash trim thats between the
upper and lower openings, second gens don't have that and thats why second gen
head units don't want to lock in place in a first gen car.
Second: I had to install a switch hooked to 12V on the amp mute line to the
amp because the second gen head unit only puts 5V to that line not the 12V the
first gen head unit puts out. Later I gonna build a little circut to do it of
of the 5V signal from the head unit but for right now the little getto switch
will work. :D
Other than those two things it was plug and play. (that and having to make the
connectors for the CD player and fix the "clicking death")

I used a regular on off toggle switch from Radio Shack. The wire you want it the "amp mute" or its sometimes called "logic mute", its the dark blue wire and its pin number 8 on the long 8 pin connector on the back of the radio and pin number 12 on the 14 pin connector on the amp. You can put the switch anywhere in the line but I made thc connection at the amp side.
1. Cut the dark blue wire (leave youself wnough wire on both sides of the cut to work with).
2. Tape off the end the goes to the radio and strip the other end.
3. Hook a new wire to the stripped end and run it to where you want you switch, run a second wire from any 12V source (I used the feed to the amp (the yellow wire) since it was right next to the dark blue wire) to the switch location.
4. Hook up the wires to the swich and your done!
I did not permamently mout the switch since I gonna replace it with a device the will turn it on automaticly. Also if you turn the amp on after you turn on the radio and turn it off before you turn off the radio you will avoid making the amp pop when you turn off the radio.
