The console top in my 95 is showing is age, and has a spot that was once on fire :)rofl:) I want to try something but need it to be smooth. I've started sanding on it a little bit, and it seems like its covered in a vinyl. Is there any easy way to get this off, or just use stronger paper? Also, would a sandable type primer work to make it smooth?

:thankyou:

Steve, don't sand it.

Take a paintbrush and cover it in brake fluid, liberally. Then put some kind of clear plastic like saran wrap on it and let it sit for a day or two. Then you can come back and work on peeling the shit off.

I used a wire brush on a drill for some of it, but if you push too hard it'll scratch up the plastic. Pressure washing the **** out of it after the brake fluid treatment might work better. If it doesn't all come off the first time, just keep using the brake fluid until it does.

Edit: I missed the part where you wanted it smooth. Use the brake fluid to strip the rubber coating, then sanding should work - this way the rubber stuff doesn't gum up the paper.

When you go to paint is, use a Vinyl/plastic dye as opposed to paint. It soaks in a little bit, so surface scratches don't show up quite as easily.
