Ok, I know that our intakes get dirty and such over the years and miles. I recently got a donor intake that I cleaned and installed on my SHO so I could drive it while I clean and refurbished my intake. Well, after starting to take mine apart and clean it I am finding a sand type of material in it, very gritty. It is best described as just like sand. The donor intake had a lot of crude inside of it but none of this stuff. It has me a little worried, should I be? Has anybody else seen it, is it normal? Thanx, Doug

Doug,

While it certainly could be sand, more that likely it is just carbon build up. A way to tell the difference would be to try and grind some up between your thumb and finger. The carbon will breakdown and the sand will not.

The carbon grit like junk is a result of our PCV system that sucks (really) oil vapor laden gases into our much cooler intakes.

bs I will guaran-damn-tee you that the cat dust (If you had any to speak of) did not aspirate into the entire intake system like that. Think about how far it would have to travel to get into the runners.

it is either

A: carbon from the dried out oil sludge

B: your airbox is not secured well or you have a hole in your air filter and you are sucking sand into the system.

One thing I have seen on my90 when I bought it was that the MAF aluminum started to oxidize badly and lift a white powder on the lip....hmmmm unexplained donut powder arrrggghhhhh.

I think my explination was a bit misunderstood. It is not sand, as in the beach. Sand was just the best word I could use to describe it. Just a whole bunch of little black hard particles that were not in the other "dirty" intake I took apart and cleaned. On the intake horns these particles were only on the side where the intake would be sucking in air. Indicating that they were coming in with the air flow. My air box is secure along with everything else (i.e. the hose and such). I am running a K/N panel filter, that wouldn't cause this would it?

Thanx, Doug

I think I know what you are describing. If it is the same substance that was in SHORacer14's intake, then you should be fine. It was built up more so closer to where the runners meet the heads. It was on the intake itself and down in the ports as well. When you take the intake back off to put yours on, look down into the ports. You will most likely see the same substance and a triangle under the injector that doesn't have it from the fuel evaporating it or whatever. I wouldn't worry.
