Hey guys (and gals :) ) I just wanted to know what you thought the approximate value of a Salvaged titled Black 2013 Taurus SHO PP with 60,000 on the odo was? It has Voice nav, moon roof, park assist etc. Pretty much has All the important option except Adaptive cruise and Accident avoidance. Has a salvaged title from a front end accident that was fully repaired at the Ford Dealer. Had no frame damage just had the bumper cover, one fender, drivers air bag, one rim, strut, And one headlight assembly was replaced. Can't tell that it was in an accident at all. Paint is near perfect. Any ideas ? :thankyou:

Welcome to the forum :salute: How trustworthy is your information, and how much time/money do you have to invest in future repairs?

I agree that unless the repair list is from a very trusted person don't trust it. Saw a Police Explorer on eBay salvaged under flood damage...ad says water was up to the carpeting only and it was removed dried etc. Strange thing is it has the wrong headlights for the options it has and the tail lights are tinted (I know of no PD that would do that). That tells me the water was a bit higher than they claim or there was crash damage as well.

Does KBB give values of salvage repaired vehicles?

I'd pay $15K. But I'm sure they want $25K or something. Definitely wouldn't pay more than $18K. You can get clean 60K 2013 SHO's for around $24K or less I believe.

A salvage title reduces the vehicle's value by a minimum of 1/3. That means a $24k retail vehicle would bring a maximum of $16k. Do not get suckered into the "no one will ever know" argument - everyone pulls a CarFax or AutoCheck nowadays, and it is a huge deal. I would not pay more than half of book for a Salvage title vehicle, even if I was confident that it was fixed right.

Before you buy it, make sure that your insurance company will insure it - some insurance companies consider an airbag deployment a "fatal" event, and will not insure the vehicle even after repaired (that may be why its "salvage" even though the repairs appear to be not that extensive.)

It seems unlikely that, from the list of damaged items, a 2013 SHO would have been salvaged. The labor to replace those items shouldn't have been all that high. But what about the Restraints Control Module, was that replaced? It used to be anyway that if the airbag went off, the RCM shorted out internally. And that's often mounted in the console and requires a fair amount of disassembly to replace.

I appreciate your question.. I have no problem with working on cars ( its mostly fun..mostly ;) ) And there are detailed pictures of before and after. I'm just trying to find out what the SHO pros here think it should/ could be worth. :)

Straight from the Factory Service Manual for the 2013 Taurus:

WARNING: If a vehicle has been in a crash, inspect the restraints control module (RCM) and the impact sensor (if equipped) mounting areas for deformation. If damaged, restore the mounting areas to the original production configuration. A new RCM and sensors must be installed whether or not the airbags have deployed. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury or death in a crash.

the RCM does not short out internally, but rather sets a hard fault code that officially requires replacement to eliminate the fault code. however, it is a software thing, and there are companies that 'reset' the modules to eliminate the code. in either case, something needs to be done to the module or the airbag light stays on.

a good number of insurance companies will always mark a title salvage if the airbags were deployed, regardless of the level of damage. they don't want the risk associated with not fixing airbag stuff correctly. that is why some of them also will not insure a vehicle that has had a previous airbag deployment, which is why I said he needs to confirm that his insurance company will in fact insure the vehicle if he buys it.

Two strikes against me. I said "shorted out" when I really meant "opened up." There is/was a thermal fuse that would open up inside the RCM. Strike two though is that apparently would open if an RCM fault were identified, not necessarily due to airbag deployment.

Don't be afraid of a salvaged car. Insurance companies write of cars for a number of reasons. I've owned a couple and were good cars. Just do a full inspection and make sure everything is running right.

I wouldn't pay more than $15-$16k for it. As someone else had mentioned it will lose about 30-40% of it's value.
