safety mode?

I was just given my mothers 94 SHO, it has about 12000 miles on it with a auto tranny. roughly...8 years ago I gunned the throttle out of the gas station, it redlined and then went into neutral. I was 17, and afraid I blew up my mom's new car. (new to her) Any way... ever since then it wouldnt shift out of first unless it slipped back to neutral. Any ideas where to start at when I get back from my deployment.

First, welcome to the forum, and it's always nice to have another armed forces member on the boards.

Second, without knowing more about what's going on with the tranny it'd be impossible to say for sure, but this happened eight years ago? That's a long time for a trans to be running like that. I would say it's rebuild time but I'm just not sure.

No, mine wont change out of first gear except to pop into neutral. Ya 8 years of it sitting in my parents backyard. Someone had told my dad years ago about the tranny having some kind of safety mode that you could reset it somehow.
