I can't speak for all models/years, but mine locks out 6th gear in S mode. I would only use S mode in the city. Anything over 55/60 and you are putting unnecessary stress on the car and wasting fuel. (maybe at some high speed it eventually goes into 6th? Not sure because there's no reason to be in S mode on a flat/straight Interstate)

S mode also does downshift braking on mine. That is fantastic for performance driving, but once again, is putting unnecessary stress on the car if you don't need the extra braking/better control.

Everyone can do whatever they want with their own cars. As for me, I use S mode when I need it and leave it in D when I don't. There is a good reason that each mode exists.

I'm not sure if mine locks out. I have a 2015.

It does, you can manually paddle shift into 6th

Another silly question. Is it bad if it locks out to 6th? I mean, there has to be a reason for that - right? I only ask because I would hate if I'm going 55-60 mph and damaging my vehicle because I'm supposed to be in 6th. As I said, I avoid paddle shifters in S mode.

6th gear is overdrive... It's not made for applying a lot of hp too.. It's for gas mileage... If your not out beating your car put it in drive... Plain and simple

I would use Drive if the ride felt just as smooth as S mode.

2015 non-PP - As Sholxgt states the tranny does lock out 6th gear in sport mode when you let the tranny do its shifting on its own....if u decide to use the paddle shifter to shift to 6th in sport mode in this situation your vehicle will then go to manual mode and u will then have to make all of the shifting decisions by yourself unless u shift it back into D and then back into S. So his/her point tells the story.....if ur highway cruising use D to save ur drivetrain and fuel and S when u want to rock and roll on those l love my car and let's race anyone who gets in my way cruises....which personally is my favorite way to drive my hot rod SHO.

It seems like it's a "to each their own" type of thing. No matter what you do it will put stress on the vehicle. If S mode causes more stress as you say, it's not that much more than what "normal" expectancy is. Either or, it seems both are good for just what one prefers.

With where I live, I rarely use the highway. I do appreciate all the input for the questions I was asking about being safe to use S mode without paddles. Just don't want to unnecessarily damage my car.

Seriously. Learning new things about this vehicle is great.
