I have been to the track 2 times a total of 9 runs best et 13.18 at 106 with a 193 60'... I didn't realize that the car shifts it self in s mode.. I thought it was to manually shift the car.. It seems to feel better and hitting the shift points at more rpm.. I am looking forward to going to the track and to see if the et and mph will get me in the twelve's.. Do many of you put your car in s mode or drive? Or am I just crazy? Still learning how to drive this car and get that 12 sec time slip.. Thanks..

I don't go to the track, but I use it a lot when racing around the streets (or anytime I'm in heavy traffic). I really hate paddle shifters of any kind. When driving a manual, I always did it by feel and by sound, and I just can't seem to get the hang of shifting by having to watch the gauge. Plus Sport mode seems to be good at not only up shifting, it seems to know by my driving when to use downshifting more appropriately.

Sport mode will "feel" more responsive and it does hold the lower gears longer at part throttle. It also locks out 6th gear unless you use the paddles to upshift it. However, at WOT, I do not think you will post any quicker time using sport mode. When slowing down after a run, it will downshift to help save the brakes but I think that is about the only difference you will see.

I have a 2014 Taurus with the "sport" mode and I also have a tune in my 2010 MKS that made the "manual" mode act like the "sport" mode on the newer models. I have only used that tune a few times at the track and there was no difference between the times using the sport or drive modes. WOT is WOT in both and shift points are the same.

Having said this, Bamsho would be more of an authority on this than I am. He has a lot more track experience with a car that has sport mode.

On the Lincolns, if you are in "S" and start to paddle shift, it will stay in manual mode until you shift to "D" or turn off the engine. I would expect the Ford to be the same but do not know for sure. In "D" if you paddle shift, after a while it goes back to automatic mode on its own. In addition to raising the shift points, "S" will also reduce steering boost and (on the 13+ cars) change the suspension setting.

The 2010-2012 when in "M" won't ever upshift unless you use the paddles. You can sit there and run it off the limiter and it won't shift to the next gear. But for some stupid reason it will downshift automatically if you press on the gas.

I assume your car is tuned - who's the tune from? I have mine from LMS and they claim they make the tunes for these cars based on the car being in "S" mode! So they posted somewhere on here about keeping the car in "S" when racing, drag, etc.

I used the search function for posts from Livernois regarding the sport mode. Jamie has posted that he personally preferred the sport mode. He has also posted that it made no difference at WOT. Those posts were all earlier this year. Maybe something has changed....

Next time you are at the track, try both. The butt dyno is easily fooled.

Maybe a stupid question, but is it good to drive the vehicle in S mode without using the paddle shifters and allowing the vehicle to do it automatically? I've been wondering this for a while now.

Yes and no the gear is going to stay lower longer when you rev high then let off the gas waisting gas it's really benefit when going thru hills or on a track when you want to be more in control but are allowed to forget because it will take back over

Ah, all right. It isn't bad for the vehicle though right? I drove today with S mode and didn't touch the paddles. Gas definitely went faster, but it felt like a much smoother drive on the vehicle. Just all around felt better. I would imagine that if it was bad to not use the paddles in S mode, the vehicle wouldn't let me.

It will increase wear how much is hard to say mechanics could tell you how many miles generally they last but no one else is commenting to that is my two cents. The less miles and less revolutions you put on the parts longer they will last

I just feel as if normal D mode puts more wear on the car. S mode seems to be overall better for the vehicle. I'm trying to remember where I read about the S mode being ideal for the vehicle when it comes to preservation. It's just a curiosity that always sparked my interest because I love the S mode, but hate using the paddles. Feels like I've been lost not knowing I can use S mode without the paddles, hahaha!

The manual says s is for off road use only... Lol.. If your in a sporty mood put it in s and go... It's not gonna hurt a thing. Those paddle shifters are almost worthless. Downshifting is really the only good they do. The car shifts itself in s

Thank you for confirming this so I don't keep questioning it. Hahaha! Epic! All I use is S mode now and driving feels much better and smoother to be honest. Definitely glad I joined this forum to learn more about this new vehicle to me.
