Hey everybody. Sorry I don't have any pics for yall yet but I've had my hands a bit full with this car.

I love this car but, Geez, is it ever slow!! REALLY SLO! Not right kind of slow. My girlfriends carolla has got me beat! Ok, now that we are all on the same page, any ideas? This is what I have discovered:

Pump, regulator and fuel pressure OK.

Maf, well, it's just as slow with it disconnected.

Butterflies are operating properly

Plugs look good and good compression

No more codes, ignition is OK

Swapped PCMs with the 89 motor for fun.

Nothing unusual

The previous owner replaced the water pump before I bought the car. Does this require removing the timing belt? If so, I think my cam timing may be way off. I have a little power from 4K to about 5K but then it cant even reach 7K and it's totally gutless after 5K. Ideas??

Thanks:wave:

It says to in the book... but there are ways around that.. :naughty:
I pulled out the Front/rear section with the T-belt on. I couldnt get the front section off while it was in the car(remember... the tube for the radiator hose is attached to it too... :oogle: ).. so i pulled the whole unit out. But if you just replace the fron half then no, it comes out easier.

However on the ATX... NO...

Did you get any codes out of the car at all?

Ever think about testing back pressure in the exhaust? Maybe a piece of the cat came off and it restricting exhaust, that isn't unheard of.

Timing belt isn't a bad idea. Is it misfiring or backfiring, or running rough?

Did you end up syphoning the old gas out and replacing the filter and getting good gas in it? After you did that maybe you should disconnect the battery for a little while so then the computer can relearn that it can now advance the ignition timing.

Do you think the brakes are dragging? Maybe the E-brake was on, I've done that before :snicker:

Could the throttle cable be stretched out? Maybe your foot won't open the throttle all the way, but by hand it can be opened all the way. (I might have that prob in the max...)

Hope you can fix it, let me know if you want some help.

Joe, Yeah I forgot to mention that I removed the y and drove it. Louder than **** but slow still. Got all the old gas out and changed filter with new gas and Techron. Never thought about the throttle linkage tho, I'll check that. No, my E-brake is not on and yes, Iv'e done that too:)

ouch....slo eh? Perhaps is the nut holding the steering wheel? J/K.

You need to jack the rear up and spin the wheels by hand to ensure that its not a sticky brake, thats a biggy right there. In fact, I would do that to all the wheels.

Timing sounds way way off, like tom said, that SPout plug could be off, or worse yet, some weeny put the timing belt on wrong and its off a tooth. That will throw it into sloville pretty quickly.

HOw about checking compression?

Driving with y pip off...hmm dont know if that will say bad cat or not as arent they all pretty slow with cats off?

I'm convinced you just need to off load that turd to me.

If things stink with the MAF sensor both plugged in and unplugged, doesn't that point to a bad MAF? Or does it default to full open when unplugged?

That's a good question. I always thought that without input from the MAF sensor that the EEC defaulted to a "limp in" mode. I have extra MAF sensors if you want to try a different one.

I've got my 91 Minus all torn apart on my lift but The Other Woman can be kicked out to give you some cooled room to work on your 90. I just got her some new jewelry to wear so she has to come out for pictures anyway.

Hey Nick, same this happened to Frk-sho, I had no timing advance with or without spout connector, turns out a furry creature had
"opened" my spout signal wiring. Repaired the wires and she's back to perfect!
Not that I wish you visits from furry friends, just hope this helps. You can check by putting a timing light on it and unplugging the spout connector and looking for change. Good Luck!
