Odd issue on the new 89...
The tranny, which was recently re-built is making a rythmic, very slight squiking, knocking noise. Its not adible unless your ear is down by the drivers side wheel. Doesnt sound metallic. Its hard to say if the sound changes with rpm, due to the fact that it cant be heard above idle. Depressing the clutch does not make a difference. The noise seems not to effect drivability in any way, shifts much better (smoother) than the other 89 and doesnt grind at high rpms. Fluid level is good...
i listened to the other 89 with 110k on the tranny it it does not make this noise. Could this be a bearing preload clearance issue?

Correct me if Im wrong, but when the clutch is disengaged NOTHING in the tranny should be moving, right?

The only contact left between the trans and engine would be the TO bearing.

BTW: do I recall correctly that the SHO trans has an oiling system that is controlled and powered my the motor

hhmmm...never thought of the TOB. I know most of em (even when their new) make some noise. Maybe its just that. Ill do some more troubleshooting tommorow.

i believe the tob noise should change when you push the pedal in, and yes some parts still spin in the mtx with the clutch in thats why we have to put it in a forward gear when shifting into reverse to stop the i believe the main gear stack from turning. as for your noise i wouldnt normally worry about it unless it was rebiult what was the condition of your main stack bearings and races? good luck brett

half-way there, I think.
If the clutch is depressed, the tranny internals will spin down and stop. I would suspect TOB or engine related.

Okay...the sound completly stops if i push the clutch down. It took a second or two but it did completly stop. What could this be? Worn bearing?

If you ask me, I'd say it definatly sounds like the TOB, did they change it when they rebuilt the tranny?

not sure, I just got the car about two weeks ago...

edit:
doesnt a TOB typically make noise when the clutch pedal is depressed (pushed to floor)?
