Hey all, I tried doing a search but i'm blocked out of any tread that seems to come up with something.

Anyway, the shotimes site said in regards to the T-5 conversion that a bellhousing from a '97 aerostar 5-speed. If wikipedia is to be believed, the aerostar from that year came with the cologne 6, not the vulcan. I thought the bolt patern on the SHO was the same as the vulcan.

Was shotimes referring to the TK-5 or the M5OD-r1? If it was the M5OD from a vulcan, could I use one pulled off a ranger with a vulcan?

I don't really know much in the way of transmissions yet.

-and I think i stuck this in the wrong forum, my bad :/

The two years were 87 and 88 that the Aerostar came with a 5 speed that had a removable bell housing. In all the other years of the 5 speed, the bell housing was integral with the transmission case.

You can use the m-50DR1 and 2 but those are "top loaders" that put the shifter only like 17" from the block. Great if you're building a truck where you sit more upright. Not so much if you're building a sportscar. However, you can make a tailshaft shifter adapter for the M50D if you're handy with metal. The innards from the heavy duty M50D found in the 4x4 Rangers can be swapped into the light duty versions. That's what I will be doing.

A good description of various Ranger trannies can be found here http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/ManualTransmission.html

Thanks, that makes thing much clearer for me. I was sorta hoping "integral" just meant more bolts heh. I wouldn't be opposed to fabbing up some sort of crazy shift linkage, I didn't expect to be able to just drop a different engine/trannie combo in the car without a few creative solutions. Will the HD guts handle the power a T-5 could? The whole thing that got me on this idea was the horror stories I'm hearing about the mtx-IV, and I'm thinking my motor will be putting out at least 290 at the crank. Well that and the possibility of a 2700lb rwd SHO.

I'll check the site, thanks again.

There are boosted 4.0 Rangers that are putting down well over 300 lb-ft at the wheels, and no one has had a transmission problem w/ the M5OD-R1HD.

btw, you do not want the M5OD-R2 - that is the one with the granny gear 1st that they used in F150s.

The M5OD is a hydraulic clutch unit, so be aware that you need to deal with that rather than a cable actuation.

The T-5 I have is from a 94-95 Cobra so it has the 7.85" input shaft and is rated for 330 pound*ft of torque.

The T-5 is much smaller than the Mazda trannies also.

I looked around that website and it led me advance adapters as it said they had a kit to put a t5 on a ranger but i couldn't find it on there site. I then searched google and there was another place that made a kit jamesduff.com but their kit is no longer available either. So i think using one of the ranger trans or aerostar bellhousing are the only to off the shelf solutions. Ive been dreaming of rwd sho for awhile and im sure once i get the 62-1 turbo and 3.2 in my car after awhile I'm going to want one even more. For the front rear suspensions i have been looking at mustang II style front suspension and a 4 link rear frame kit for the rear bot summit and jegs have basic kits and Art Morrison Engineering has complete ones. I think that is probably the best way to go although more expensive.

Hotrodkid and I... ;)

Can't wait to see them. I know someone that would love to adapt a turbo 350 to a SHO engine.
