The fact you have an 89 SHO, tells me you have a very high tolerance to risk.
Get some quotes if you want, but try it yourself. For $100.00 (and that includes buying a dremmel kit if you want to really minimize the area you work on) you can buy enough product, and all the applicators, to experiment on a tin can before you attempt your car, and still have a ton of stuff left over.
If you take your car to a body shop, the first year apprentice will be assigned to your car.
If in the end, you are not happy with your results (and you will be), you can take it to a body shop then.
They aren't going to charge you more if you take a swing at it yourself.

There are quite a few new ways to deal with rust such as you are finding on the 89'. You can check some of them out at the website for Eastwood Industries. Here's also a link to a clip from My Classic Car with Dennis Gage showing how their rust process works.

How bad would it be if I waited until the summer to get this done? The car is not driven in any salt. How much can it spread waiting until June or so?

Hit the seam with one of those rust sealers that have been mentioned, front side and back side..... and you can wait till June with no problems.

It will spread eventually but not much by June. I would find someone who has alot of experience and will dig in and get it right the first time. You don't want to pay someone to clean it cosmetically and still have some underlying stuff left behind under new paint.

The seams on these cars rust in... ummm rust prone geographic areas. I think I read there is a panel seam or adheasive area near the gas filler and that's why the rust is prevalent there on alot of SHOs. I don't know that to be true for sure, but I thought it interesting when I read it.

If you get it all you shouldn't have ongoing worries about rust down here. You might want to look under the outer door cladding for rust spots too. Moisture sits there where the clips are. My northern car had rust at the seam where you have it, below the gas filler area, on the fender lip of both rear wheel wells, and I finally had alot coming in through the rocker area. That's when I gave up trying to fix it. Yours is in enviable shape in comparison.

what caused the rust to begin with on my car was the tail light leaking,try sealing that up as best as you can.
It shouldn't get too much worse by summer time.

you could jsut put some greese on it until summer. thats what i did

A 20 Year old Friend of Ashley and I is going to repair it for about 150 dollars out of his mothers garage.

I know how this sounds, But the kid does amazing work. He currently has a E30 M3, E36 M3 and a Porsche 911 in his driveway (He daily drives a 318i) awaiting body work for customers (He just painted the E30 M3, Looks amazing). The guy does amazing work.

So... he is going to cut out pieces of metal from the rear filler & quarter panel, splice in pieces from another car, do the bodywork and paint the filler & quarter panels for $150? Good luck!

Honestly, I think the easier way to fix it would be to remove taillight & bumper, grind down the rust, sand-blast it, coat it in one of those rust encapsulator products, use body filler to smooth it over, and blend the paint right under the taillight. The repair area would be a whole lot smaller than removing & splicing in more metal.

When I said Replace, I probably should have been more specific ....As in replace the replace the the removed rust/metal with a Filler....not a whole new piece of metal.
