so how messy would it be to run the engine with the valve cover off?

even for a few seconds?

I got some noise on start up, I think its the front chain tensioner, just sounds like where it comming from until I build up oil pressure...... anyway I can take the VC off and start it up for a few seconds without blowing oil all over the place so I can really track down that noise? I HATE throwing parts at cars

anyone done this before?

If you have an old valve cover laying around, chop a hole in it so you can see just what you wanna see and use a clear plastic pop bottle to cover the hole and allow you to look without getting oil everywhere.

I want to see this video.

30psi or so doesn't scare me

just at startup and at idle for a few seconds its less then that.......

plus I don't believe the oiling system has any ports bleeding off oil into air but I'll check the engine book just to be certain.........

It'll only run until it builds up oil pressure, then the noise stops, so it won't be worthwhile to keep it running......

I've had cooler lines for transmissions blow out on me when doing trans flushes haha... now thats like 60-100psi probably depending on model.. and all comming out one hose... now talk about a fountain... thats damn near hilarious if it didn't make such a mess.... the tranny pump will shoot that fluid sometimes a good 20-30 feet haha

At start up and idle, you'll likely see 60 PSI when cold. Not to mention the cams slapping oil around that the timing chain throwing oil around. You can make a mess just leaving the filler cap off.

I've run Windsor small blocks with no valve covers before. There was quite a bit of splatter, but no spraying.

OHV Windsor != DOHC SHO V6.

It's going to make a decent mess of things.

I, too, would like to see video. :)

Yes it will be messy, flinging oil off of every rotating part under the covers. (Hmm, why does that sound strangely ******)

The timing chain tensioners work off of spring tension AND oil pressure. If the inside of the cylinders of the tensioners is gummed up, it might be keeping the pressure rail in the slack position until there is enough oil pressure to push the rail out tight against the chain.

We used to check the valves on our old motors with the rocker covers off. You could put extra pressure on one rocker at a time to hear if it needed tightening. But that was in the days of non electonic engines and you could wash it down with soapy water afterwards.

on the front head a small bleed off hole in the tensioner squirts oil across all the head. on the back head the tensioner is upside down, so that bleed hole just squirts oil into the bottom of the tensioner chamber
