Forum, thanks for info on water pump leaking when cold. Replacing the pump took
only 3 hours and did not require I remove/replace the timing belt. The pump did cost
$165 at Pet Boys. The only problem now is that I seam to be running hotter. Before I
ran with the needle between the M and A. Now it starts there and then slowly moves
up to between the O and R. It was a hot day (106) but I seam to remember not going
that high on a hot day. Does anyone know the temperature values for the gauge?
What temperature is the engine at when the needle is pointing to a specific letter?

On a second problem: My ATX is having some problem shifting to 3rd, both in the upward
direction but primarily in the downward direction. The problem appears more when the
vehicle is hot. The transmission has about 162K on it with no slipping as far as I can tell.
The last fluid change shows no parts or ware indication in the pan. What is a "Shift Kit"?
Could my shifting solenoids be sticking? I am getting error code 641 from the computer.
Would a leaking water pump have any affect on shifting? Problem with CPS?
Any suggestions?

The gauge is not calibrated other than the temperature is acceptable if it is within the "NORMAL" range. Ususally, 190 degrees F is right at the center of the NORMAL range and where your thermostat should open and maintain the temperature. You will have to use a pyrometer to check the actual temperature. You may still have air in the system. Give it a couple of days to purge. If still having problems, something else is causing it.

Did you know that you can get a remanufactured A1 Cardone water pump from local auto parts stores for about $65 with a lifetime warranty? I wish you had asked.

The timing belt really needs to come off because there is no way to remove the pump without coolant draining on the belt. That is not allowed. I hope you protected the belt well.

The code is pointing at the transmission problem:
641 (O) Transmission solenoid/circuit failure Shift Solenoid 3. You need to get that replaced to correct your shifting problem. Here is my source for EEC testing information -> http://www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html
