Rubber trim

So before the forum went down, there was a discussion about a fix for the rubber trim ****** maligning many a SHO up north, and the discussion was pleading for solutions to remedy it.

I'm not sure if it got answered and I can't remember which thread held the answer- but looking at it, I think I can scrape it off, smooth it out and use either the liquid electrical tape, or the rubber "tool handle dip" applied over the cleaned metal.

Anyone?

There is a flat black rubberized bumper paint in rattle cans available. I was going to try this on my '97 this spring.

I've got some spares, but can I just scrape/sand off the 1" of bubbled trim, and cover it with the handle dip stuff? I think I'll give it a shot.

You'll probably find that when you remve the outer rubber coating there'll be no solid metal. You'll find a dusty powder only. I replaced all 4 window run channels on my 95 SHO last year and there is no way the old ones could be reused. I got 4 channels in like-new condition from a wrecked 94 Taurus in Quebec last year. The Taurus only had no more than about 10K miles on it and I stripped it of everything good for a total cost of about $100.

What trim are yall talking about? I have a PA car and it has bubbles on the bottom window trim, on all 4 doors!

I think that those are called the "dew wipes" if I'm not mistaken. I was talking about the rubber covered surround that meets the top and sides of each window.

Thanks for the advice, I'll probably just put the new ones on. Do I have to pull the windows to do that? The Taurus I pulled them off already had the windows bashed out of it, so it wasn't a big deal to get them out. I'm not bashing my windows out, and they are tinted too, so I really don't want to do too much prying on them for fear of tearing the film.

Oh, okay! Those on mine are fine, but I have pulled the ones you're talking about, for someone up north.

You can just roll the window down, pull it loose from the top, then pull it up and outside of the window, getting the sides out at the same time. It really doesn't take long at all, but you have to work it right to get the sides out [one at a time, the one with the angle first]. I think I might have removed the inside window bottom trim/seal part, along with those "L" shape rubber pieces on the bottom sides.

Sounds good- do you know where I can find dry silicone spray? The dealer had some years back but now doesn't know what I'm talking about. I can't find it at my parts place.

I buy aerosol cans of silicon **** from Canadian Tire. I've seem similar products in Home Depot.

is it the dry type? I tried spraying the wet silicone before, but it spreads out on the inner "dew wipes" (wow- twice in one post!) and wreaks havoc trying to keep my windows clean...

I wish I had gotten the can they used- he used it on my super slow Thunderbird windows- I thought a motor was going out. He sprayed the tracks and the windows were faster than new.
