i am thinking about doing the 96 Brake upgrade and i was wondering when i purchase the rotors for it, is there anything i can do to prevent rusting on the rotor that doesnt touch the pads? rusty rotors just look terrible and i just dont want it to happen! Thx for the replys in advance! :thumb:

You can use some rust paint or get some rotors that are coated. I have Powerslots in the front and they're cadmium coated, not a hint of rust on the hats or the vains.

It depends if you are looking for looks or performance. Drilled/slotted rotors are mainly for looks. I go for performance so I would get some plain zinc washed rotors.

definelty performance, not really for looks since im not running aftermarket rims, where can i pick up some zinc washed rotors? can i get them at a autozone or advanced auto parts? i didnt want to really have to buy them online and have to wait for them to be shipped, since i cant really drive right now it would be best to get something asap!

Of course may not need 13" cobra rotors but this guy can get you the OEM rotors as well. His name is Richard.

This is were i found him. I recommend you see the ebay link and then call him to arrange anything, i personally like to talk to the people i do business with

Paint the rotor hats and vanes with high temp paint and you'll be fine. Any overspray will be neatly removed or burned off the first few times you use your brakes.

One thing to keep in mind about zinc washed rotors, if you get 'em hot enough, the zinc will melt and flake off. I wonder if cadmium plating holds up better?

Not really something to worry about with most street pads and normal braking behavior. I would expect zinc washed rotors to stay nice on my 94ATX's 96-brakes for the life of the rotor with the weather we have here.

However...

The 4-pistons on my 89 made the zinc go away in places I would have liked it to stay in short order...say within the same week I bedded the pads. :oogle: That's with polymatrix E pads which are a medium temperature pad. They're a lot more aggresive than the OEM ceramic type Ford pads on the 94's 96 brakes. Also a *lot* noisier and dustier. They can really get things hot in a hurry. I made the mistake of bedding in the pads on the 94's chromed slicers with all-seasons. When I came back from my bedding runs the chrome was blistered to ****.  :smash: Didn't see that coming. My new wheels weren't finished yet and I didn't want to abuse new tires if they had been ready so I decided to throw those slicers on. Oops.

^^^I run Carbotech Bobcats on my cadmium plated Powerslots on 96+ upgrade. After about 2 years it's still good, had it on the track a couple of times with the rotors smoking afterwards, the cadmium coating didn't flake.
