Does anyone, anywhere make a light weight rotor that will fit under the 16" rims (ala 96 style rotors)? I'm picking up some vette calipers and want to have a light weight rotor to go with them rather than the stock 96 rotors. I've tried Baer and ALcon with no luck. HELP!

I was going to just guess and say "heavy" judging by the box, but I took one and weighed it on the digital scale:

17.5# each

I got the crossdrilled ones and they are in a neat spiral pattern, and nicely chamfered.

Can't wait to get 'em on - the car could definitely use a little more stopping power!

regards,

The front brake rotors weights are as noted below;
stock OE '94-95 10.88" 15.50 lbs
stock OE '96-99 11.58" 17.05 lbs
stock OE '94-00 13" Cobra/Baer/PBR 19.51 lbs

Baer "EradiSpeed" 2-pcs 12.99" replacement rotor 16.58 lbs

As far as the calipers, mounting brackets and pads

stock OE '94-95 combo 12.91 lbs
stock OE '96-99 combo 13.37 lbs
stock OE '94-99 13" Cobra/Baer/PBR 8.73 lbs

As you can see the 13" front Cobra/Baer/PBR brakes with the light weight Baer 2-pcs rotors actually weights 3.1 lbs LESS than the stock '94-95 brakes and 5.1 LESS than the stock '96 brakes. Even without the VERY expensive light weight 2-pcs Baer rotors the stock 13" Cobra/Baer/PBR setup still weights about 0.2 lbs LESS than the stock '94-95 brakes. One thing to keep in mind is than the 13" brakes require larger and heavier 17" rims and tires.

deacon:: it requires the 17" wheels, but if you got some decent light weight wheels with the 2 piece rotors, it should weigh the same as stock because you will lose the 3 pounds on the brakes but gain the 3 pounds on the wheels. so, its an expensive as **** upgrade if you are worried about the 3 pounds, but worth it if you are racing. if you want them for the street and to look good, 3 pounds doesn't matter crap to you anyways. do you have a part number for the replacment 2 piece rotors? can you get the baer kit that includes the 2 piece? i do care about the 3 pounds, i am hoping for some SSR wheels this summer for autocross too. between ssr wheels and 2 piece baer 13" brakes, it would be a 6-8# loss per corner, pretty nice, expensive, but nice.

Two 13" Baer "EradiSpeed" rotors for a Cobra application by themselves cost $525 list. If you order the kit from Baer, it is one of the many upgrade options. Check it out on their website. BTW, they now have the 13.0" rotors in the SHO lug pattern (for the SHO kits) so you don't have to buy rotor for the Cobra application and have the lug pattern re-drilled. Also it should be stated that the Wilwood kits are even lighter weight than the Baer/PBR kits.

As far as weight savings or penalties, don't forget about the weight of the tires. You need to factor in the complete brake system, rim and tire combo together.

For example:

stock '94-95 setup
brakes 28.4 lbs, rim/tire 42.1 lbs = 70.5 lbs

'96 brakes and 16 x 7.0" rim with 225/55-16 tire
brakes 30.4 lbs, rim/tire 43.6 lbs = 74.0 lbs

13.0" Cobra/Baer/PBR brakes and say 21.5 lbs 17 x 8.0" rim with 245/45-17 tire
brakes 28.2 lbs, rim/tire 46.4 lbs = 74.6 lbs

Now if you were to slap down some serious cash and buy the light weight 2-pcs rotors and a set of SSR-GT1 forged 17 x 7.5" 20 lbs rims
brakes 25.3 lbs, rim/tire 44.9 lbs = 70.2 lbs

Although I have prepared my SHO's suspension and brake systems as if I were going to road race her, I realized that I wanted a strong 17" rim for our wonderful streets here in Northern Ohio. That's why I chose a somewhat lighter weight pressure cast 21.5 lbs rim, vs. the very high cost but still lighter weight and somewhat marginal strength (for street use on a 3340 lbs curb weight FWD car) forged wheel. I am very happy with my 71.7 lbs setup.

NOTE; all tire weights are for the same brand and model of tire, YMMV.

You realy dont need to spend big bucks on wheels to get 20 lb wheels. My first wheels 17 inch MIM asti's i paid 100 a peice for. and the new 17 inch Alessio Turbo's i paid betweeen 130-150 a peice for. also the tire wheel combo i have weighs less than 45 lb.
i wouldnt pay more for brake rotors than i did for wheels.

i was told the wilwood kits were for track use only and needed constant cleaning and rebuilding. my car will be for mostly track use when its done, but i don't want to have to spend a day preping the car and a day to clean and rebuild everything the day after the track.

94shoboy, i think the wilwood brake system weighs about 19 poundes per side, pads-calipers-brakets-rotors.

from what i have read, only a few people have had a problem with the wilwood track brakes. since they are so popular the service parts are very inexpensive and easy to get.
