Eba5e533801b3ba0578df909a24c28d0So I noticed this whole getting gas the other day. Plastic strips running along the roof are all discolored, looks like they might be starting to dry rot. Anyone ever remove/replace these?

It's hard to tell from the picture but these strips have a very rough texture and are very hard and brittle feeling.

I got that problem real bad.2010 non pp. I thought maybe it was mold. I'm out of town now but will try to capture image when I get home. I tried a black trim restore product and didn't have any luck. Then I was thinking maybe sun damage from outside (car has not been garage kept). I kinda put my problem on the back burner and forgot about until I saw your post. I'm interested in replacing mine as well. I'll follow this thread see if others have advise.

road salt and/or airborne salt can get under the top layer of plastic film and discolor the shiny layer. this happens more often on the grille area, but the "chrome" strips over the roof also get it. they are replaceable but not cheap to do.

I have always wanted to see what it looked like if those strips were painted black...

Mine aren't chrome. I think it's supposed to be flat black plastic. But they are light gray-ish now and very hard and brittle.

the black should be able to be restored with a careful application of tire shine or similar product.

I got home and it's been raining since, so no photos. It seems to me my problem is far worse than OP. From the discription a light gray color, sounds like oxidation. I have had good results removing oxidation using a black trim restore product. Mother's and Meguires are two that have worked for me there's others that may work even better. Druseph you should try one of these products. A lot cheeper than replacement. I tried this stuff on mine already. Didn't even make it better much less remove and restore it. I scratched with my fingernail on a rough area of mine. It scratched deeper than the surface and material built up under my finger nail. It's like dry rot. Decomposed and not restorable. They are about $75 each side for oem parts. I did that research but couldn't find anything on replacement procedure. Anyone have info or actually do this?

If this strip is called the ROOF RAIL or ROOF DITCH MOULDING (great name, right, better than GUTTER MOULDING :)), looks like a hook & snap system.

Roof Ditch Moulding
Removal and Installation

  1. NOTE: Push down on the outboard side of the moulding, while pulling up on the inboard side.

    Remove the roof moulding.
  1. Inspect the roof moulding retainer hooks for correct orientation.
  1. NOTE: The mounting hooks should have a 90-degree angle.

If necessary, adjust the retainer hooks using standard hand tools.
  1. NOTICE: Make sure the roof moulding is correctly aligned before snapping it into place or damage to the vehicle may occur.

NOTE: The windshield moulding must sit over the roof moulding.

Install the roof moulding by snapping it onto the retainer hooks.

Sounds just like mine, definitely beyond restoration. Can scratch away surface with fingernail, like you said. Definitely seems dry rotted. I think if I tried to remove it, it would just break because it's so brittle.

Thanks SHOdded, that's exactly what I needed. Notice the warning about damage to vehicle. That is invariably what would happen to me without procedures. I break stuff. That's how I do it.lol. Good prices on the parts too.

If you call them up at Levittown, talk to Benny at the parts counter. Very helpful guy, been around a while.
