Today I pulled out my entire rod shifter assembly, ripped it entirely apart, cleaned and lubed everything, re & re'd the cracked bushings w/ some polyurethane ones I found on ebay. Shifts sooo nice now.

However... someone who worked on the car before me crossthreaded the bolt that bolts the shifter to the side of the transmission housing! Looks like they used an impact gun on it or something.. the threads are all flat.

The dealership down here cant get the bolts anymore. I got a tap and die and rethreaded the bolt and tapped the threads inside the transmission housing as a temporary solution.

The bolt now screws into the housing by hand.. however having rethreaded everything there is a slight loss of material and I don't want to pull the threads out so I'm afraid to tighten the bolt too much.

its a 12 x 0.75 bolt i think 4-5" long.. only 1/2" of the bolt actually threads into the transmission as far as I can see, so I was wondering if I could get a longer bolt of the same size and thread pitch and use that? or should I try something else?

I'm kinda surprised that there is so little bolt threaded into the transmisson in the first place... makes me wonder if its even the right bolt, or if someone jimmy rigged it and zapped a bolt in there.

You can get a section of threaded rod cut it to length and thread it in then lock it in with a nut. Or double nut the end and tighten them against each other so it acts like a bolt. Even better still after choosing the length of bolt you need you could weld on a nut.

awesome idea, never thought about threaded rod; it should work perfect. I will defiantly give it a shot!

McMaster Carr has the threaded rod in that size.
