As I'm changing the rod bearings, what's the best way to rotate the crank to get at each pair?

Maybe it'll be obvious once I get it apart, but if not, I want to be prepared.

Are there any differences between the MTX and ATX procedure? I beleive all the writeups I've seen are by those with an MTX.

Thanks in advance,

Nathan

I've always taken out the spark plugs and used a long 1/2" ratchet with a deep socket. Make sure you clean the crud out of the spark plug wells before you take them out, in fact you should loosen each spark plug two turns in order to lift it away from and loosen up the crud. Then blow it out good with compressed air.

The 3.0 and 3.2 have differences, but only in the things that are bolted to the engine; pan, motor mounts,y-pipe... The crank and bearings are the same.

I just put a ratchet with a 4" extension on the crank bolt. I didn't need to loosen plugs to crank the engine to the next position.

Hehe... Maybe I ought to run a compression check..

I just pushed on the crankshaft counterweights to rotate the crankshaft while still laying under the engine. Same procedure for the 3.2L.

Alright He-Man! :p

I used my trusty $1 piece of 4 foot X 1" Sch 40 PVC pipe as a cheater bar on a ratchet on the crank bolt. You need a 19mm or 3/4" 6 point socket on the bolt.

Thanks for the info everyone, sounds pretty straightforward.

One thing I'm still confused about though.. Does the ATX share the same oil pan gasket as the MTX, or does it have a different P/N? I can't find a listing for the ATX.

Thanks again,

Nathan

Different oil pan but it's the same oil pan gasket set. I would buy a separate tube of permatex ultra black RTV. Those two little tubes included in the felpro set are a joke.

I apply the Permatex Ultra Black to the bottom of the block. This keeps the RTV from getting spread all over. You will understand why when you try to fit the pan back into place. Some interference to be had.
